EPILOGUE
Well, at last we’ve finished the 26th. beast!
Let’s recall some points, a light review at least.
We began with a couple of cute little brutes.
With "Aardvark" antics, and bush "Bandicoots."
"Cackler" was our first feathered-friend revealed.
(Perhaps its other names would be better concealed!)
The "Dromedary," we learned, had a camel driver,
All covered in robes, no Lady Godiva!
The robes for protection from searing sun
As he steers desert ship at ferocious run.
For the "Eider" duck we travelled to latitudes north,
To snowy terrains to bring eider-facts forth.
The "Frog Eating Bat" was critter number six.
What spectacular flight, what frog-eating tricks!
Then we went on, down Africa-way,
To seek out the "Gnus" at work and at play.
To dig up gnu facts, to search for gnu clues,
As to why the gnu fits into wildebeest shoes,
As to what makes this animal continually act,
Moving in vast herds, travelling tight-packed.
The "Hippopotamus" is always a favourite, of course.
Some call it a river-cow, some a river-horse.
But one thing to state is really quite fair,
That it’s in rivers it belongs, and not in the air!
The "Ibex" does, indeed, reside way up in the sky,
But on mountainous crag, for it cannot fly.
They know the real value of being alone,
Free from interruption by visit or ’phone!
The "Jabiru" stork’s a most spectacular bird,
Do you recall the jabiru facts that you’ve heard?
Then, for something truly different indeed,
We covered a creature on which sea mammals feed.
As we learned the habits of millions of "Krill!"
From the depths of the ocean we quickly ascended,
To mountainous regions, skywards extended.
And it’s there we glimpsed, in brief poetic drama,
The hardy South American Andean "Llama."
"Musk Oxen," then, were next on the list.
People should be glad that musk ox still exist!
Much exploitation these poor beasts have had to endure,
Uncomplaining as always, ever demure.
We then charted course for Australia fair,
And encountered the "Numbat" diminishing there!
That’s also the land of the cedar bird or "Oriole,"
Where it pursues its theatrical mimicking role.
And not far away along billowing shore
Can be discovered the jellyfish, "Portuguese Man O’ War."
No time to sit back on the travelling tour.
Now its Guatemalan jungles that flash up a lure.
A lure of green beauty, of iridescent sheen!
It’s the bird "Quetzal," a true jungle queen!
"R" was for "Rhinoceros," so stolid indeed.
We proferred sound warning, worthy to heed
Against fooling with rhinos, no matter what,
A warning that bruised persons may have forgot!
And then came the creature most sinister of all!
What was its name? Can you recall'?
The "Scorpion" it was, that malicious brown stinger.
Let’s give a wide berth to that lethal tail swinger!
And then we were back, yes back on the road,
Searching out facts on our friend the "Toad."
If we learned anything there will strictly depend
On whether we now regard the toad as a friend!
Those bald-headed monkeys, in trees above ground.
Uakaris are indeed odd little primates,
Happily residing in Amazonian climates.
Whereas the dainty "vicuña" simply insists
On residing up high, amid mountainous mists
Along the ‘altiplano’ ridges of Andean fame.
(And it’s right to do so; who could declaim?)
From hemisphere south to hemisphere north
We continually seem to tour back and forth.
And it was to a northerly direction for us
That we eagerly sought out our friendly "Walrus."
Though the walrus may be huge indeed,
This does not deter it from diving high speed
Down to depths that would cause a ‘Costeau’ to quake,
To secure splendid shellfish for a ‘clam-bake.’
"Xeromys Myoides" covered the 24th. letter.
This fase water-rat was a real go-getter,
Scampering about around river and swamp,
Not given to high country where "Yaks" like to romp!
For yak country is about as high as you get,
Up in those craggy mountains all over Tibet.
Finally we came upon a quite marvellous bird.
Of the "Zitting Cisticola" you’d formerly not heard?
That it’s a new one for most is ever so true
For it’s never found in man’s aviary or city zoo.
But only out in the wild where it clearly belongs,
Sitting amongst trees and ‘zitting’ its songs.
Now our beastly anthology we trust may be used
To remind us of our ecology, so often abused!
To provide a sound lesson for both young and old
Towards caretaking this earth as an ‘animal fold,’
Ensuring that creatures have the right to survival
With mankind as friend, not uncaring rival!

I have enjoyed reading this book so much. What a wonderful way to teach adults and children alike to respect and educate themselves about the wonderful creation around us. All creatures great and small.
