Watercolor tree [....watercolor]

in #art7 years ago (edited)

If you're new to watercolor, this is actually a great piece to try out! It's surprisingly easy!

First, you just paint in your trunk (as you do the branches, put more water in to decrease the strength of the brown color).
Once that dries, then just start throwing that pink (or whatever color you want!) paint on there it doesn't have to be "neat" or "perfect" - in fact randomness is even better! In some of the wet areas put a dab of paint into it and watch it spread to get a darker value pink (wet-in-wet) Then do whatever else you want to do, splash some paint on there from your brush to give it a cool effect, drip some paint from above your paper....whatever you want to do! Finally, if you want, you can go in with a pencil and outline some of the water to give the tree shape a little extra form and to create a bit of a contrast.

I am currently editing my Intro video to my new series "Learn art with me" and one of the first things we will make is a watercolor tree like this one (I think we'll actually do a few watercolor trees in different styles - one is going to be "stained glass" style), so keep an eye out if this is something you'd like to try!

Stained glass style?!? Sounds inspiring from your description. I am intrigued and excited to see these trees you mentioned!

I find one of my greatest hurdles is choosing a subject to depict, so I end up sketching for hours sometimes. And before I know it and the day is done, or it's time to start the day. This can become a frustrating cycle at times...

Your work is always on point. What do you do to select a subject and create a composition?

I know the cycle all too well! I think i'm in that cycle more than i'm not in it....
Honestly there isn't really anything "way" - I will usually see something and then it sparks an idea in my head. Sometimes I will see a style of art that I want to try out for myself (I think that was the case for this tree), other times I will see something which will give me an idea, even though the idea isn't really even related to what I saw (if that makes any sense). So I really don't have any particular way as far as I can tell. Other times friends will see stuff on instagram or pinterest and ask me to either recreate it for them, or do something in that style. Historically speaking, I have always been drawn to portraits, in fact the first 10 or so years that I did art (I wasn't always active all 10 years) I only did portraits; It wasn't until relatively recently (2 years maybe?) that I started to do anything that wasn't a portrait. In fact the only reason I got into watercolor was because I saw a style of portraits that I loved and I really wanted to try it - and the even funnier thing is I haven't even done that style yet!

Yes, your quasi-method of sorting your ideas out onto paper (/digital canvas) makes sense to me. Over the past few months since I became active on steemit again I've gained priceless insight and imagination fuel by interacting with other artists. (Thanks for answering all my questions, you're very patient!)

Portraits are captivating to both artist and viewer. Humans love looking at other humans, it seems to be one of those things that's "programmed" into us. Photos are fantastic - instant (accurate) gratification. And yet handmade portraits retain their charm and appeal.

As far as the portrait style that inspired you to pick up watercolor, it's coming! Perhaps it's one of your greatest works in the making ☺

Wow! Man, I need to get my watercolors out soon! Both you and @fumansiu are making me want to paint!!

wow mom I didn't even see your comment here.

you definitely should!

simple but very effective, i like it !

Is it actually easy or just easy because you're pro? XD It looks like a good exercise to try especially when learning, technically easy and amazing results, this looks really pretty!

This was one of the first watercolors I ever did! So yeah, I'd say it's pretty easy! I'm going to make a video soon making one in real time, so if you're interested you can check that out to see just how easy it can be!

Beutiful painting i love watercolor!

Thanks, yeah watercolor can be really fun!

Very beautiful result! Nice soft colors, I love it!

Hi, absolutely you can share it! Thanks!

I will try it someday! With pink and purple :D

yes! Pink and purple are some of my favorite colors to mix.
I'm going to make a tutorial video making one in the next week or so.

MAN I REALLY NEED TO FIGURE OUT WATER COLORS SO I CAN USE THEM PROPERLYYY xD let me go cry in a corner now..??

Nah man, but like the contrast that you got with the different strokes looks so gorgeous. It's kinda like why I enjoy to use copic markers for my art. No but like, very beautiful. I think I might try to paint for my next post here. Constantly forget how pretty paints are on paper.

thanks! Yeah, paints can be pretty awesome. When do I upload the video for recreating this tree (or at least in this style) you should try it out!

A great piece? I totally agree! Surprisingly easy? Hmmm...

Why is it that everything you touch seems like it turns into gold? Me thinks you have Midas genes in you, brother. If I were to try to emulate this, I feel like I'll come up with something third graders would laugh at. I could see it now. The horror.

If this was one of your first outputs with the watercolor, then it's great you stumbled upon what you're meant to be doing. Looking forward to increase my skill level when I learn art with you!

ha, thanks! dude, trust me, this one really is easier than it might look! I can't wait to make the video for it so you guys can try it out too and see for yourself!

I failed to buy a watercolor kit the other day because the fiancee and I were making major mileage trying to get stuff for the wedding done, but I'm hoping I would able to get my hands on one soon. I can't wait to get laughed at by third graders haha!

lol, just say it's you're style! The good news is the videos will all be waiting for you! Plus, the longer it takes you to get the set the more videos will be available!

Oh yeah! I never thought of it that way haha! It's a win-win then!
