Rembrandt House Museum - Museum Het RembrandthuissteemCreated with Sketch.

Rembrandt House Museum, the house owned by Rembrandt and where he lived between 1639 and 1660. Even the entrance tickets have pieces of art on them, of course with self-portraits of Rembrandt.

One of the rooms that impressed me, was the art cabinet, where Rembrandt kept his collections of art objects and rarities. Arranged on shelves around the walls were many rare objects. Rembrandt collected even seashells, corals, dried animals and exotic weapons. He also had busts of Roman emperors used to draw portraits. This room was like his own museum, also collecting Venetian glassware, coins and medals. He also kept drawings and prints made by other famous artists, summed up to 8000 pieces.

How did Rembrandt make his paint? Inside the museum you could attend a scheduled demonstration, but I missed it unfortunately. The free audio guide said that we would use the stone to mix the powders from the table.

Below you can see the main studio where Rembrandt painted.

The pupils' studio was a smaller room than Rembrandt's own studio. Also the ceiling was lower. This room was arranged as a workplace for his students. Each cubicle was separated by wooden partitions, where his pupils could work unperturbed. This room was restaurated to look like the original from the mid-seventeenth century.

A fun fact that I learned from the audio guide was that some parts of the furniture or even the columns from the fireplace were painted to look like marble or other precious stones.
