Reflections of a mermaid - sand sculpture

in #art6 years ago

They say 'The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.' But for me I'm quite happy with the meadow I've got even though I aspire for a Savannah. I'm not sitting on the fence here, it's just that if I choose a side I will only be be disappointed having to leave some grass behind. Anyway, In Ireland right now we have a heatwave for the last few weeks and there is no green grass anywhere so it's probably just good to stick with what I have got, with the added bonus that I don't have to mow the lawn.

Something fishy

Trying to find an intro for this sculpture was quite difficult as I don't remember too much about it. Just that the theme we were given was 'Mermaids'. Nothing else was too memorable about the project.

Fergus Mulvany and I were back in Duncannon, Ireland and this time we had one accomplice. @stijgerart. With a subject matter like mermaids we weren't too inspired and thought to do a piece about this idea of always looking for what you don't really need/ want.

I love the ocean and have dived many times over the years, I love the feeling of space and freedom it gives but I also like the opportunity to get my feet back on dry land.

Be careful what you wish for

The Mermaid in our sculpture looks with longing to the land and a figure of a woman on the shore. This woman holds a mirror and in the reflection we see what the mermaid wants. To have two legs and and be 'Normal'. What ever that means.

The figure on land looks to her reflection in the mirror the mermaid is holding and sees herself with a tail. (The corner of the mirror broke off while sculpting so the image got bit distorted.) The mirrors are reflecting the reflection of the reflection, so to speak.

As a bit of fun I carved an ammonite like shell. I thought it might give a bit of movement to an otherwise static piece.

Pretty much that's all she wrote. Fergus carved the mermaid and @stijgerart made the lady on the shore. I made the mirrors and other bits a piece.

Thanks for reading. I use Steemit to document my work as an ephemeral Sculptor of sand, snow and ice. This will hopefully give it a new life on the blockchain. I am doing them in chronological order so there are many more to come.

This is fantastic work. I'll be following your account from here on out.

I get the attraction for ephemeral art. In the arts group that I run, we make wooden sculptures with the intent on burning them at a big celebration party when they are finished.

Your post reminds me of a snow sculpture that a friend of mine did this past winter. He did it in a very busy public park and it lasted for days before the snow melted. I kept an eye on the park in Instagram, and it was cool to see his work being photographed and shared around on different people's instagram feeds, and to see comments from people that had never met the guy.

Here's a pic of the snowman that my friend made.

Yes the ephemeral art are very much a performance as about the finished piece. I have also made a few fire sculptures in my day. I like the way you create something only to have it's destruction the performance.
I like you friends sculpture. Here in Ireland last winter we had some really heavy snow but I didn't get a chance to make anything because I was hard at work in my studio doing some wood work. Hopefully next year I'll get a chance.
Thanks for you comment and sorry for the late reply.
Following you now also.

well sandsculpted - great ArtWork :-)

Thank you @Yoogyart and for the resteem

I love it when your sculptures appear in my feed, @ammonite. 😊 This one is truly amazing! I can't imagine the dedication it must take to create pieces like these.

Thank you Aisling. Glad there's more irish people on steemit. I've been very lucky to be involved with sand sculpture since 1996 and am still really enjoying it. The dedication comes from loving my job. I'm following you now.
