Great Article. I especially like the point about about art being the artists way of making sense of life. I've found that in my writing and music practise 'inspiration' (though it often occurs in the form of a depression or discomfort) often strikes when I move to a new place. It's my believe that the influx of new sensory input starts a reaction in my brain that must be processed via artistic expression. I've written about the intrinsic link between art and personal development in my first post if you are interested.

Excellent post! We share the same belief that artistry and alchemy go hand-in-hand.
As audio alchemists, we have committed ourselves to deepening our relationship to our craft and utilizing music as a means to achieve personal and collective transformation.
By studying traditional alchemical wisdom, and applying these philosophies to the practice of music, we've found our creative output to be greatly increased and potentiated.
In our eyes, we are standing at the threshold of a great alchemical revival. The future is bright indeed!
Great post! Thank you! For the last few years I've been pushing this idea that artists are "alchemists in disguise".
I had the same issues, wrestling with the idea that music may be nothing but cheap entertainment for people to get high to.
But when I started hear about the healing experiences people were having with the music, and seeing how it has changed the world around me, I knew something deeper was going on, and science couldn't explain it
This led me to alchemy - where art and science and religion meet and are one and the same. It's been the most liberating realisation, and has produced unimaginable transformation in my life since I began on this path
I started @audioalchemy with my friend @opulence, and we've been applying alchemy to music production and teaching this to musicians for the last 2 years, with great results!
Loved reading this.. I share many of the same values and have come to the same conclusions. It is the artists who lead the way forward and art is usually at the center of every renaissance and revolution throughout history.

Its an unfortunate thing to have to defend the role of artistic creation in today's society. I'm glad you have worked to find a response -- if not to your friend out loud, at least for yourself and for us as readers.
The utilitarian view still requires the role of an artist in society. Sometimes it is easy to forget that after a person has worked to acquire health, shelter, and even dignity, there's more needed. The artist is pursuing that question. (And also, much art informs the basic needs as well!)
Thank you, @bypic. I think it's important for aspiring artists to recognize the potential power of art for their community. Having a clearer understanding of what art does and how it can affect the viewer can potentially guide artists towards otherwise unlocked artistic improvement. Taking the art field as a whole more seriously might just result in an increase in artwork of great merit. I think the power is in the hands of educated artists who can begin creating more effective work that won't need any defense in the eyes of utilitarianism.
