Gargoyles
Gargoyles are functional. They are designed to protrude from the rain gutters on buildings to divert water from running down walls and eroding the masonry.
They also add a bit of whimsy!
These are in Portugal
Notre Dame in Paris
And at The Biltmore in North Carolina in the US
oh wow they all look amazing. it gave me hercules vibes! great pictures Melinda
Ha! You made me realize that I never watched Hercules! Thank you!
Something functional and a touch of art... Very nice.
Thanks! Amazing detail carved in stone.
Never thought of them actually being functional. They are really sort of creepy creatures, guarding the gates of??? They are very weathered from years of facing the elements. Very cool pictures. Thanks for sharing
I think they were meant to guard off evil spirits, too. Multifunctional downspouts!
That is what I thought. Well, they would scare me off as well. lol
same as I thought

They add something scary! Really amazing! I have uploaded the image. I like it very much. Though the works are old but Steve friends will be fascinated by this, I believe
I am glad you liked them, but uploaded? Do you mean you re-blogged them? Please do not use my photos anywhere without permission!
I meant it was a mysterious animal that protects us and becomes alive when it chooses or detects danger, but in a way its doing it now to by off and protect us from mother earth
These have always fascinated me....you captured them very well. Makes me wonder about the construction way back - how they knew how much or what kind of mortar to hold those heavy gargoyles in place. I wonder if they have a post inside to attach to the building?
They were certainly craftsmen! I walked alongside Notre Dame once when it was raining and saw the water that comes pouring out of their mouths. It was amazing to see.
Gargoyles are fascinating! Great set of photos. resteemed :)
Thanks, Keith! They are amazing sculptures!
There's one on a house on my street... I'm not sure if it's actually functional or just decorative. I should take a shot today & show you
Oh do. It's on a modern house?
Based on the age of other houses on the street I'd say it could be a hundred years old. I just took some pics. It does look decorative to me. Could it be to scare birds away?
