Very interesting, I think much of it's strength is due to it's ability to it's flexibility and resilience. Metal is stronger but less resilient, once it bends it stays bent even if the force is removed and eventually weakens the structure, as well as having to bear it's own weight in larger constructions.

Yeah, you might be right there, instead of breaking it bends ! Super flexible, and the older it grows - the wider the diameter, hence the strength and flexibility both increase with time proportionally.
