Viking settlement found under the church

In Norway, archaeologists use laser scanning technology to study the ancient Viking settlement under the church of the holy king. The settlement of the Vikings, very ancient according to scientists, was under the archaeologists discovered by the church.

Last year, the researchers found a church in Trondheim, Norway. It was in this church that the King of the Vikings, Olaf Haraldsson, was elevated to the face of the saints. Experts found a stone foundation of a wooden church, where, possibly, the relics of the king were stored after his death and canonization in the XI century.

Olaf Haraldsson or Olaf II of Norway, is considered the patron of the country, so the opening of the church was a significant event in Norwegian archeology.

The second phase of the church's excavation began in February 2017 and continues to this day. Under the ruins of the wooden church, which was built around 1015, fragments of an older church and the remains of an ancient settlement were found.

The head of the excavation Anna Petersen said that this place was once flooded with the waters of the Nidelva River, therefore fragments of the ancient settlement of the Iron Age were hidden under a thick layer of sand.

To explore the ancient church and settlement, specialists intend to make a three-dimensional computer model of the excavation site, to study the terrain with the help of a laser, to make detailed photographs, and then to make out the XI century church for access to older buildings.

In the future, on the site of today's excavations, they plan to open a full-fledged exhibition and present a three-dimensional model of the dismantled church to all interested visitors.
