It’s been hard to watch the news of the flooding filter in from our home state in ...
... Queensland and our hearts go out particularly to those effected by the devastation in North Western part of the state. Satellite images show that over 13 million hectares literally went underwater (that’s 33 million acres or 130,000 sq km). To put this in perspective for those in the Northern Hemisphere it is an area the size of Austria and Switzerland combined, or the entire state of Mississippi in the US. For those in the South this is larger than the whole North Island of New Zealand, or almost twice the size of the state of Tasmania. After a long extended drought some parts of Queensland received a crazy three years’ worth of average rainfall in a week. The flood is starting to look historical in proportions even for a land that is used to extreme flooding with some suggestions it has exceeded a 1/100 year event. While not receiving as much media attention as the flooding in the north eastern part of the state due to its much lower population density, the devastation in the north west has been total for a lot of cattle station owners with estimates as high as up to 500,000 cattle killed along with countless wildlife. The shot of a soaked baby eastern kangaroo was taken a few years ago. Love Life, Love Photography
Cool
It's pretty intense right now :-/ I'm living in milder climates right now, but who knows - some climate models predict a very very cold Europe after some warming targets are 'achieved'. Be safe :-)
Yes well all eyes on the flow of warm water in the golf stream. Europe would be like Quebec without it. Crazy watching the Arctic regularly get to like 30c above average as the jet stream boundary winds break down and let all the cold air out in these so called polar vortexes.
Yes, it's like magic - things we can't touch still 'pushing' each other.

Oh wow, that's sad! I love kangaroos!
It is very sad and almost no reporting.
Geez, I honestly hadn't heard this at all... I did see images of the suburban flooding as you mentioned, but had no idea.
Australia's exposure to weather events is super worrying, especially given the majority of the population is just in 5/6 cities.
There is a little bit of news filtering though; from farming journals https://www.fwi.co.uk/news/weather/up-to-500000-cattle-die-in-catastrophic-australian-floods and EcoWatch https://www.ecowatch.com/about-500-000-cattle-feared-dead-after-historic-queensland-floods-2628662464.html .
They are about the polar opposites of the political spectrum those papers; but it seems only the fringe media reporting it properly.
The Betoota Avocate is reporting it also lol

Yes; very little media but it is one of the biggest floods in the history of Australia. If no one is dying no one cares it seems; same as my post about the fires in Tassie destroying 1000 year old forests.
I have family up there who run cattle stations (and missed the floods as they are on the tablelands) but I have seen the extent of it from the qld weather chasing groups I follow on facebook.
@intrepidphotos aboustely heart breaking, feeling the same way living in Tasmania and seeing much of my favouite places on earth being burnt to a crisp. Awesome photo!
Yes. I wrote an article about that last week https://steempeak.com/photofeed/@intrepidphotos/the-guardian-massif-and-fires-in-tasmania
I have family living there...They've had a bit of rain up there huh? They're tough buggers though, those banana benders...They'll get on with it when the water subsides.

Yes I have family there as well. Its going to be tough to recover from this for those out west as the damage as been total in a lot of cases.
