The apostle Peter in Matthew 17:27 takes a coin out of a fish, what is its meaning in the bible?
In times of Jesus in the holy land everyone had to pay their taxes to Caesar, that is to say, to the Roman Empire. And Jesus, like everyone else, also paid his taxes. The Gospel of Matthew tells us especially about this fact, the apostle Peter pays his taxes and those of Jesus by taking a coin from a fish, this miraculous fact is to indicate that it is God through his divine providence who pays this obligation. God in his wisdom and love provides for man and in him we have to have all our trust, Jesus explains to us.
The mundane and the spiritual are not necessarily opposed to each other since everything comes from God, Jesus knows the thoughts of God and requests Peter to perform this miracle; but Jesus clarifies in private that they do not have this obligation, because they are children of the king who is in heaven and that in order to not create a scandal among the simple people they have to pay.
With this the Lord teaches also to us that if we want to enter the Kingdom we have to understand the difference between what corresponds to the world and what corresponds to God, knowing how to discern spiritually to make the right decisions, that is the key to a prosperous and happy life.
This is how the sacred scriptures tell us this amazing miracle in the gospel of Matthew:
"After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma temple tax came to Peter and asked, ´Doesn't your teacher pay the temple tax?´
´Yes, he does,´ he replied.
When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. ´What do you think, Simon?´ he asked. ´From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes—from their own children or from others?´
´From others,´ Peter answered.
´Then the children are exempt,´ Jesus said to him. ´But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.´" Matthew 17:24-27.
