Washinomiya Sanctuary, Tokyo's oldest sanctuary and a real Lucky ☆ Star anime location, has faced an unfortunate loss. Its torii, a traditional Japanese arch that marks the boundary between the profane and the sacred space of Shinto shrines, collapsed around 10:40 a.m on Sunday.

The torii was about six meters high and had a piece of wood that ran along the top. This wood was protected by a rain-resistant roof, but it seems that it had suffered damage over the years until it rotted and caused the collapse.
The bow collapsed just as a car passed by but, fortunately, its 49-year-old driver was only shocked to see how the front of his car suddenly rose into the air. Outside of that, he was unharmed.
The torii had already been restored twice since it was erected during the Meiji period (from October 23, 1868 to July 30, 1912) and, since the premiere of Lucky ☆ Star in 2007, it became a place of pilgrimage otaku On New Year's Day, a date on which the Japanese go to temples or sanctuaries to do the Hatsumōde, the Washinomiya Shrine has received 100,000 pilgrims.
