The Older Days Of Anime ✌🏻

🔹 I started watching Anime more than 20 years ago, like many Latin Americans, I discovered Japanese animation thanks to the TV channel Animax and Locomotion, I don't remember exactly which one came first, but it was an experience that would change my life forever.

Not only did I fall in love with the stories and characters that exist in this genre of animation, if we can call it that, but also with the history behind the Japanese animation industry. **A story that I share with you in this video that I made a long time ago for my Youtube channel and has served many students.

🔸 Empecé a ver Anime hace mas de 20 años, como muchos latinoamericanos, descubrí la animación japonesa gracias al canal de televisión Animax y Locomotion, no recuerdo con exactitud cual llego primero, pero fue una experiencia que cambiaría mi vida para siempre.

No solo me enamoré de las historias y los personajes que existen en este genero de animación, si es que podemos llamarlo así, sino de la historia detrás de la industria de la animación japonesa. Una historia que les comparto en este video que hice hace mucho tiempo para mi canal de Youtube y ha servido a muchos estudiantes.

🔹 Japan is a country that has gone through many natural tragedies, wars and events that undoubtedly destroyed their economy and left their spirits down, however, instead of settling for their situation and accept being a broken nation (both economically and emotionally) they focused on something that they saw made them happy, the world of animation, entertainment and comics.

🔸 Japon es un país que ha pasado por muchas tragedias naturales, guerras y eventos que sin lugar a dudas destrozaron su economía y dejaron los ánimos por el suelo, sin embargo, en lugar de conformarse con su situación y aceptar ser una nación quebrada (tanto económica como emocionalmente) se enfocaron en algo que vieron les hacia felices, el mundo de la animación, el entretenimiento y los comics.

AL PRINCIPIO - IN THE BEGINNING

🔹 The stories that became animated or serialized, did not deal with very complex themes, they were limited to entertain while promoting Japanese ideals and culture, exalting patriotism.

In the beginning, the Japanese struggled to find a style that differentiated them from the Americans, they lacked world-class artists and many people saw animation as something childish in the country, especially after going through a war that had sown despair and anguish throughout the population.

🔸 Las historias que llegaban a ser animadas o serializadas, no trataban temas muy complejos, se limitaban a entretener mientras impulsaban los ideales y la cultura japonesa, enalteciendo el patriotismo.

En sus inicios, los Japoneses lucharon por encontrar un estilo que los diferenciase de los Norteamericanos, carecían de artistas de talla mundial y mucha gente veía la animación como algo infantil en el país, sobre todo luego de pasar por una guerra que había sembrado la desesperación y angustia en toda la población.

Sin embargo, los comics de la post-guerra iban a cambiarlo todo. - However, post-war comics were to change everything.

🔹 With anime (and manga) heroes came to burst into the minds of the Japanese public, bringing laughter and values alike, molding the mentality of the inhabitants of what is now one of the most advanced countries in the world.

That which they considered so childish and unnecessary, helped to alleviate the stress and depression in which many Japanese found themselves, something quite ironic, because now in the manga/anime industry there is a work environment full of exploitation and stress, but at the beginning it was not like that.

If we look at some chapters of Mazinger Z, Candy Candy, Heidi or even series considered "violent" like Dragon Ball.... The characters enjoyed a very characteristic innocence, the hero would always be complete, with some picaresque touches to please the viewer, without falling into the mundane at all.

🔸 Con el anime (y el manga) llegaron los héroes a irrumpir en la mente del publico nipón, aportando risas y valores por igual, moldeando la mentalidad de los habitantes del que ahora es uno de los países más avanzados del mundo.

Eso que consideraban tan infantil e innecesario, ayudó a aliviar el estrés y la depresión en la que se encontraban muchos japoneses, algo bastante irónico, pues ahora en la industria del manga/anime existe un ambiente laboral lleno de explotación y estrés campante, pero al inicio no fue así.

Si vemos algunos capítulos de Mazinger Z, Candy Candy, Heidi o incluso series consideradas "violentas" como Dragon Ball... Los personajes gozaban de una inocencia muy característica, el héroe siempre seria completo, con algunos toques picarescos para agradar al espectador, sin caer para nada en lo mundano.

🔹 The anime of yesteryear were full of light and hope, they were animated dreams that managed to set a standard. However, that did not mean that they were perfect or ideal for all audiences.

Japanese was maturing and little by little the children's stories needed to be more complex, the public and the authors were ready to touch much more sensitive themes but, although all this was foreseen, it was not expected what would happen that year, which was the best and worst year of Japanese animation, and in general, the otaku culture.

🔸 Los animes de antes estaban llenos de luz y esperanza, eran sueños animados que lograron establecer un estándar. Sin embargo, eso no quería decir que fueran perfectos o ideales para todo publico.

El japones iba madurando y poco a poco las historias infantiles necesitaban ser mas complejas, el publico y los autores estaban listos para tocar temas mucho mas sensibles pero, aunque todo esto estaba previsto, no se esperaba lo que ocurriría ese año, el que fue el mejor y peor año de la animación japonesa, y en general, la cultura otaku.

EN AGOSTO DE 1988 - IN AUGUST 1988

🔹 Something happened that would completely change the industry, and turn anime and manga into the enemy of Japan.

Along with the adult stories came animated pornography (Hentai), the grotesque and the superficial took over the market... It had always existed, in fact there are records that one of the first manga drawn in feudal Japan, was erotic, however the Japanese behind the major television networks, producers and publishers, did not know the damage they were doing to the community due to the little understanding they had about the impact of their stories in the minds and behavior of the general public.

The excessive sexualization of the characters, mostly minors, is something that remains until now, it is somehow part of the Japanese culture and is not something that deserves to be criticized in this publication, however, during August 1988 a man named Tsutomu Miyazaki, would make the whole country turn against that industry that helped them so much in the past, not through a union or protesting in front of the doors of some famous studio, but by murdering 4 innocent girls.

🔸 Ocurrió algo que cambiaría por completo la industria, y convertiría al anime y manga en el enemigo de Japon.

Junto con las historias adultas llegó la pornografia animada (Hentai), lo grotesco y lo superficial se apoderaron del mercado... Siempre había existido, de hecho se tienen registros de que unos de los primeros mangas dibujados en el Japon feudal, fue erotico, sin embargo los japoneses detrás de las principales cadenas de televisión, productoras y editoriales, no sabían el daño que le estaban haciendo a la colectividad debido al poco entendimiento que tenían sobre el impacto de sus historias en la mente y comportamiento del publico en general.

La excesiva sexualizacion de los personajes, en su mayoría menores de edad, es algo que se mantiene hasta ahora, de alguna manera es parte de la cultura japonesa y no es algo que merezca ser criticado en esta publicación, sin embargo, durante agosto de 1988 un hombre llamado Tsutomu Miyazaki, haría que todo el país se pusiera en contra de esa industria que tanto les ayudó en el pasado, no por medio de un sindicado o protestando ante ls puertas de algun famoso estudio, sino asesinando a 4 niñas inocentes.

EL ASESINO OTAKU - THE OTAKU KILLER

🔹 This man would turn anime, manga and all the culture around it into something taboo, so forbidden and frowned upon that fans had to go to buy his series with their faces covered.

The story of the Otaku Killer impacted the industry in an incredibly negative way, and in one way or another, shaped the anime we see now by changing the way stories were told, rescuing certain values and pushing for laws that changed everything completely.

It's true, in the West we can get very grotesque things coming from Japan, but it's all due to technology and how easy it is now to upload all the content to the cloud, however, there are many controls that must be passed in that country for adult material to be published.

I still don't understand the reason why series characters are sexualized, especially when it comes to young people under the age of 15, but I guess that will be a story we will discuss another time.

🔸 Este hombre convertiría el anime, manga y toda la cultura a su alrededor, en algo taboo, tan prohibido y mal visto, que los fanáticos debían ir a comprar sus series con la cara tapada.

La historia del Asesino Otaku impactó la industria de una forma increíblemente negativa, y de una u otra manera, moldeo el anime que vemos ahora al cambiar el modo en el que se contaban las historias, rescatando ciertos valores e impulsando leyes que cambiaron todo por completo.

Es verdad, en occidente podemos conseguir cosas muy grotescas provenientes de Japon, pero es todo debido a la tecnología y lo fácil que resulta ahora subir todo el contenido a la nube, sin embargo, existen muchos controles que deben ser pasados en dicho país para que el material para adultos sea publicado.

Sigo sin entender la razón por la que los personajes de series son sexualizados, sobre todo cuando se trata de jóvenes menores de 15 años, pero supongo que esa sera una historia que debatiremos en otro momento.
