Meliodas is the eldest son of the Demon King, being recognized as one of the most brutal warriors of all the Clan of the Demons. Three thousand years ago, he was the leader of the Ten Commandments, who were at war with the Clan of the Goddesses. In addition, Meliodas was considered as the most likely successor to take the throne of the Demon King due to his cruelty and strength. However, due to the union with a goddess named Elizabeth, he ended up betraying his clan and killing two of the Ten Commandments, Aranak and Zeno during his escape. This unbalanced the balance of power between the Demons and the Goddesses who convinced the other races to join them, unleashing the great Holy War. During that warlike confrontation, Meliodas formed with Elizabeth the group known as Stigma and fought with Drole and Gloxinia against the Clan of the Demons until both ended up joining. In the last days of the Holy War, Meliodas and Elizabeth fought against the Demon King and the Supreme Deity who tried to punish them for having betrayed their respective clans. Many centuries later, Meliodas would go to the Kingdom of Danafor where he would become the leader of his Sacred Knights. Later a slave woman from an enemy kingdom named Liz was sent to perform a night ambush, however she failed and was sentenced to death in that kingdom. In spite of this, she was saved by Meliodas who affirmed that all those who opposed that would be her enemies. Immediately, Meliodas takes Liz to her house, where she begins to think that he was after her body, but both began to know each other more by becoming lovers, both of them living together, accompanied by Wandle. At some point Liz offered Meliodas a sword which she rejected because she did not want to kill anyone.

Some time later, the Demon Fraudrin began to destroy Danafor destroying everything and killed Liz right in front of Meliodas which unleashed his anger with which he was able to defeat him and leave him on the verge of death. Followed by this, Meliodas stops in front of her, and Liz makes her promise, that although she can forget who she is, never forget the principles that sustain her, after these words she dies in the arms of Meliodas, who cries under the incessant rain that falls on both. Liz's death caused Meliodas to lose himself in his anger and exploit his immense power which in turn destroyed and completely eliminated the Kingdom of Danafor. While leaving the destroyed kingdom, Meliodas found and took a baby with him, also ran into King Baltra Liones and Zaratras who when seeing Meliodas offered to take care of the baby while they treated his wounds, however, he rejected his He threatened him and said that he should not lay hands on his wife, which left the Sacred Knight stunned.

Zaratras took Meliodas to the Kingdom of Lyons, where the baby, Elizabeth, was adopted by King Baltra. Following this, Meliodas requested to be converted into a Holy Knight of Lyons. Zaratras took it as a joke, so Meliodas challenged him to a sword fight in which Meliodas defeated him completely. Zaratras agreed to give him the recommendation and stamp of approval that allowed him to be promoted to the Sacred Knight and so he could always remain close to Elizabeth.

Soon after, King Baltra had a vision about the arrival of The Seven Deadly Sins, who would become the kingdom protectors and stop the Ten Commandments if they were to be released. Merlin claimed that she and Meliodas were the first two members and thanks to the king's visions, she was able to identify the other five.

When The Seven Deadly Sins had not yet been formed, Meliodas saved Diane from the attack of knights who bothered her because of her size. After defeating them, Diane was attracted to him. Shortly after that, Diane was sentenced to death under false charges of murdering Matrona and several Holy Knights, but Meliodas intervened at the last minute to claim her life and from that moment she joined her group.

Time later, Meliodas visited Ban, who at that time was imprisoned and was constantly executed but without any satisfactory result for his executioners, due to his immortality. Once he found him, he asked him to join him, but Ban rejected his offer, for this reason Meliodas was forced to persuade him by force, an act that resulted in a violent fight between the two. Once Meliodas sent Ban flying with a punch out of his cell, he was very excited and asked him to continue the battle. Meliodas replied that if he wanted to continue fighting against him, he would have to join him and from that moment they both began their journey together.

Meliodas was present when King was transferred to his incarceration and also accompanied Merlin in the search for Escanor.
