Welcome back to another pet filled blog, today we’re relaxing a little with some of our favourite cat filled anime series, straight from Japan. Perhaps you’ve exhausted TV shows through endless binging during lockdown and looking for something new to try. Maybe you’re a pet loving anime and manga fan just like us. We have 5 purrfect anime series recommendations to go through, featuring our favourite cats.
1. Fruits Basket
Written by Natsuki Takaya, this is a supernatural rom-com that features more than just a tail or two. You’ll get well acquainted with high schooler, Tohru Honda as she spreads sweetness and kindness in everything that she does. As unfortunate events unfold, Tohru finds solace as she invited to live at the Souma estate by her hotshot classmates. This is the start of a magical journey that sees Tohru develop connections with her peers at home, eventually uncovering that they transform into animals of zodiac when hugging the opposite gender. If you’re a fan of fiery ginger cats, look out for Kyo Sohma who brings a little chaos and character to this series along with everybody else.
Fruits Basket 2001
Fruits Basket is one of our favourite romantic supernatural themed anime and both renditions deserve a watch. Its initial adaptation released in 2001 (Studio Deen) is 26 episodes long. A reboot eventually came in in early 2019 (TMS Entertainment), a second season aired this year.
Watch Fruits Basket (2001) and Fruits Basket (2019) on Funimation and Crunchyroll.

2. My Roommate Is a Cat
Many cat owners around the world will think about to how they came to be as carer and cat many weeks, months and years ago. Its wonderful hearing about such stores and My Roommate is a Cat is an episodic look into a chance meeting between writer Subaru Mikazuki and kitty favourite, Haru. Without giving too much away, we feel that this story captures the experiences and feelings that many cat owners may have undergone at some point in their cat caring life. Shifting story perspective makes this slice of life anime a well told story filled with emotions and bonding. Minatsuki has infused the essence of cat life in this story, watch it over on Crunchy Roll.
3. Chi's Sweet Home
Over a decade ago, Konata Konami penned Chi’s Sweet Home, a sweet and comedic manga about a tabby kitten that accidently gets lost during a daily walk with her family. She then stumbles upon a welcoming family that take her in for an extended period. They name her Chi and we get to share this growing kitten’s perspective, understanding her experiences through wonderful monologues. The animated series was aired in 2009 and we have a soft spot for this anime that envelopes the daily life of a cat with such imagination. Watch it on Crunchyroll!

4. Natsume Yuujinchou (Natsume's Book of Friends)
Life is wrapped in supernatural goodness as we join Natsume on his inherited family secret that brings many Yokai (spirits) to haunt him for their freedom. We meet cat bodyguard, Madara/Nyanko-sensei who has his own agenda but soon develops a bond with Natsume. Madara’s normal form is of a lucky cat, a traditional beckoning cat. This story may not be specifically about cats but its most definitely worth a watch and easy to follow. We feel warm watching this series and there are six seasons to enjoy as we follow Natsume and Madara on their adventures. Watch it on Crunchyroll.
5. Sailor moon
Waking up early in the morning and catching an episode of Sailor Moon is a nostalgic trip that we hope to share with many of our fellow pet lovers. An iconic series, Usagi stumbles upon a world of magical power and justice as she rescues a cat, Luna, from a group of troublesome children. There are many battles ahead but Luna is always by Usagi’s side to offer a helping hand. There are a few other magical cats along the way too.
Sailor Moon is a longer running series, its original anime running aired from 1992 over five years. A reboot was aired in 2014, lasting for three seasons and a new season is set to release in the coming months, 2021. Watch Sailor Moon Crystal on Crunchyroll.
The world of Anime is filled animals all over. Kicking back with our fur babies and watching our favourite episodes now and then is a great way to relax and bond with your pet.
