How to cut your pet nails?

Hey #Steemians ๐Ÿถ

ยฟDid you miss me?

Here's my first post with really nice information to all of us ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ•
So, in my introduceyourself post I told you that I'm a Veterinarian nurse and a Groomer also.

Lets get to the point, Did you ever want to cut your dog's nails without hurting him?
Or have you feel fear of hurt him so bad that you don't even get to cut?

Do you know where to cut, so you don't gave him physical or psichological harm?
Have you even spend you money to take him to the veterinarian to get those nails cut?

I know that I have, and if you're like here's this post to help you my #steem fella

Lets get to the basics:

Crucial: Understand that the dog's nail contains inside two blood vessels (arterial and venous) and a nerve. If we cut the nail beyond the logical limits, the dog will bleed after suffering great pain from the action of the nail clipper on its sensitive nerve. ๐Ÿ˜ฟ

Do you already have a pet nail clipper?
In the market there are many, in different shapes, sizes and brands.

  • ALWAYS use nail clippers designed for dogs, never use nail clippers or normal scissors.

Here some of them:

Choose the one that is most practical to you, the function is made by all

Step by step:

1

  • Raise your pet's paw and touch its nails with scissors. Do not cut, just touch the nails.

2

  • Then leave the scissors and give him a treat. Do this several times until he feels comfortable before cutting a nail.
(This is for first-timers or if your friend has already had bad encounters with the scissors)

3

  • Hold the tip of the nail you're going to cut gently, but firmly enough to keep it from escaping. Place the tool you have chosen for the cut on the dog's nail.

Here I leave you where you should make the cut, remember that we should not cut the sensitive part of the nail

It is at an angle of 45 ยฐ the idea is to be flush with your pad ๐Ÿพ, but here we are not all specialists or mathematicians, so do your best to make it look great!

4

  • Cut each of the nails in this way, pet him every time his quiet and comfy.
DO NOT FORGET ABOUT NAILS ON THE INTERIOR FINGER (dedo interior) ๐Ÿ‘‡

The cut of these nails is crucial, because it does not wear away when walking like the others and if you stop cutting you can even fit in the leg and create an infection ๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ˜ท

I KNOW WHAT YOU GONNA SAY

ยกHEY JENN! What if my dog has black nails?

Well here's a special step by step:

As I told you before, the idea is that the nail stays flush with the pad of your paw, like this:

But how to be shure?

1

  • Start cutting a piece of very small nail, about two millimeters and look at the section that has left the cut on the dog's nail. If you see that everything is only white, it means that it is only keratin, and you can cut another small piece if you want.

2

Make a second cut, small too (no more than 2 millimeters). Surely after this second cut and appreciate that the section of the nail is no longer white but in the center there is a gelatinous body color blackish or grayish. There you must stop, because if you keep cutting, the following is the living part of the nail, and that we always want to avoid so it wont bleed.

It might look like this:

I must say that a dog that has enough time walking on the street, that circulates on all kinds of surfaces, that runs, jumps ... The most normal thing is that it only requires cutting the two "inner" nails of the front legs. In the case of animals with spurs, with nails that do not come in contact with the ground, it will also be necessary to control and cut them.

And well guys nobody is perfect in anything, there may also be the case that in an oversight or even by malformations in the vein (which may grow a little more than normal), an accident may occur ๐Ÿ˜ฟ

What can I do if I cut it wrong and it bleeds?

  • Remain calm and talk to your dog with a calm tone. Give him a treat immediately to distract him and calm him down.

  • Take control. Stay calm and safe, but ready to face any problem that may arise when cutting your dog's nails. If you reach the vein of a nail and it starts to bleed, do not let your dog get away from you and start running. This will help reduce pain and more damage to the nail.

  • Stop the bleeding. Apply an astringent powder in the area as quickly as possible. Hold the leg and press the powder on the end of the nail until the bleeding stops. You may have to keep pressing the powder on the nail for several minutes, but the longer you can apply firm pressure, the greater the efficiency with which you stop the bleeding. If you do not have an astringent powder, you can use cornstarch, flour, coffee powder or even a bar of soap.

  • Reassure your dog. Try to keep him still and calm, giving him treats to distract him and calm him down. Avoid walking or running for the next 15 minutes. This will help prevent the nails from bleeding again and will also help prevent further damage and disaster. Comfort your dog to keep trusting you and not make negative associations with the nail cut.

If you see that your dog have long nail veins and you are afraid of hurting them, take them to the vet to have a specialist cut them :)
