The Woodrock Animal Sanctuary in South Africa
I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Woodrock Animal Sanctuary on the outskirts of Pretoria in South Africa. We had an amazing time there, giving all the little friends some love and getting to know about the origin and workings of this heart-warming NPO.
WARNING!! - Cuteness Overload!
A few days back, my best friend and her boyfriend decided to christen their new home by adopting a kitten - a few hours later we were all in a car and on our way to Woodrock. The drive was fairly long, but pleasant - one of the perks of road tripping in South Africa is the ever-changing scenery.
We arrived and immediately rushed to the cat section of the sanctuary. Woodrock has a very interesting layout - the sanctuary has different spaces designated to each species, spread over a very large area of woodlands. The cat area was made up of two emptied out vans turned into dorms, and a backroom for those who needed special care. My girlfriend and I roamed around picking up all the kittens to see who was the most playful, our favorite was Percy - a kitten confined to a cone because he suckled his own penis too much and almost ripped it off -so we're told.
After playing with the kittens we took a walk down to the doggo section. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of space given to all the animals. There were two sets of puppies, one group of toddlers and another group of slightly older puppers. We had the time of our life playing with them and got absolutely filthy rolling around and being swamped by gangs of fur-babies - probably one of the most therapeutic activities ever!!
The older dogs all had their own rooms, shared between two roommates. The space for each dog was so much more than any other shelter I'd been too, and the dogs were clean, well-fed, and happy!
By the time we had finished up with the dogs, my friend had decided on which kitten to adopt, so we walked back to the cat enclosure to deliver the good news. I found myself extremely jealous, I wish I could've adopted too, although I don't envy having to pick one animal out of all the amazing creatures.
Woodrock Animal Sanctuary is a really amazing place, started by a couple who just wanted to make the world a better place for animals. As humans we take so much from nature, we've even taken some of natures best creations and domesticated them to suite our needs - in return I think it's only fair that we look after our beloved pets and ensure they live happily.
