Sea lions and seals—what’s the difference?

in #animals7 years ago (edited)

Sea lions, seals and walruses belongs to a group of animals called pinnipeds (earless mammals), which means wing footed or fin footed. Well, you could apparently pick out a walrus if you saw one.

But how do you tell sea lions and seals apart?

Sea lions and seals are marine creatures. They spend most of their time to find food in the ocean each day. At the end of their limbs, flippers are present which help them to swim. To keep themselves warm in the cold ocean, they have a thick layer of fat (directly under the skin) called blubber, like all other marine mammals.

They look so identical! Can you tell who's who?

Well, look closely at their ears, the one with a small ear flap on each side of its head, are sea lions. Whilst seals only have a tiniest opening for their ears. Seals are more likely adapted for water than for land because they can't whirl their back flippers to stroll on land, that's why they walk like a caterpillar. On the other hand, sea lions are more adapted for life on land than water because they can easily whirl their back flippers that make it easy for them to walk or run on the land.
