2 abandoned puppies discovered, and thankfully were immediately adopted

in #animals2 months ago

We normally shy away from people seeking to adopt puppies because anyone that has ever had a pet knows that this is the most difficult portion of a dog's life and many people are not prepared for how hard it is going to be and give up and abandon the animal a second time. This is worse for the dog than if it had never been adopted in the first place because the animal becomes accustomed to being looked after and then all of a sudden finds itself in a completely unfamiliar situation of no longer having food given to it. In almost all of these situations the dogs will die soon after if not rescued.

These dogs were found on the side of a road by a concerned person who called us. There was no mother anywhere around nor was there a sort of den. It appears as if they were simply dropped off there by someone who couldn't take care of them.

When we discover abandoned puppies, we are pleased that we found them before the elements and harsh realities of street life do, but we are also a bit let down because our kennels are beyond full and we honestly cannot take on any more cases. Thankfully we had some adopters step up and offer to take them on and we approved the adoption because this couple have a large yard and also have a lot of experience with raising dogs and have adopted from us previously. Had they been newcomers who were just overwhelmed by the cuteness of a puppy, we normally will reject the application for adoption because more often than not, new dog owners are not prepared for how difficult raising a puppy can be and when reality sets in and the dogs start chewing on the furniture and pooping on the floor, they will re-abandon the animal.

I do always find it a bit alarming that someone could look at this face and decide to toss it on the side of the road anyway. We just got lucky this time and had someone that we trust that wanted to adopt before we even found this guy and his sibling.

So after a quick visit to the vet to get some vaccinations and a health check-up, he was off to his new forever home. Normally, we would check in on adopters from time to time but because of the situation involving this family and how great they are, we know that we can rest easy. This pup will have a great home and it will be much better than staying in our kennels with 40 other dogs.

I didn't get to know him very well before he was shipped off but just like almost all puppies, he was ready to shower me and anyone else who got near him with love and I was happy to give snacks in return.

This story has a good ending but there is a lesson here. These dogs were clearly intentionally abandoned and were unwanted offspring. This situation can be prevented by sterilization - which is very inexpensive and sometimes free here in Thailand. In fact, a great deal of the world offers free sterilization to anyone who asks for it. Chances are that the same is offered where you live and I believe that it is just perpetuating the cycle of eventual cruelty when people decide to not sterilize their pets. The process is cheap or even free and it only takes an hour or so. So if you have a pet, especially a pet that is allowed to wander outside, please do your part and get it sterilized. That way you will not be faced with the difficult decision of potentially abandoning them as well. Depending on our financial situation at the time, we offer free sterilization as well and the Thai government, despite not having any official animal control, offers the same thing once a year in honor of the previous King, who was an animal lover himself.

It's very easy to do our part to reduce the amount of suffering in the stray animal population around the world.
