The Redback Spider

in #animals8 years ago (edited)

One of the few highly venomous spiders in Australia is the Redback. Very dark body with a red line make them an impressive looking creature.

They belong to widow spiders family but are relatively small compared to some other spiders from this family; only 1 cm for females while the boys are not even half that. This spider can seriously harm you but since the introduction of an antidote in '50s there havent been any fatalities.

One very cool thing about these spiders is after mating with their partner they canibalize the body of the male. Think about that next time you go out on a date ;)

Reason I am talking about Redbacks is I like Australian flora and fauna and second is this particular animal has something in common with my hobby; coin collecting.

If you are collecting silver coins chances are you know about the coin below. It is one of the most expensive 1 oz modern minted silver coins.

Beautiful hey. This coin goes for ~ USD1500 which is a lot of money for a 1 oz coin when you could buy ~2.5kg of silver for that money. There have been many tries to replicate this success by Perth Mint and others of similar coins but none have the premium of this coin. Mintage is 5000 coins of 1 oz 999/1000 silver by Perth Mint.

Upvote and resteem if you like above info.

I kick myself for a while for not buying one, I liked it but it had Tuvalu on it instead of Australia so I didn't buy. Cheers

I wasnt a stacker back then, only started collecting coins 2010 and by the time i found out about this coin it was 1k

Great post irfo1. When I saw the picture of the redback I didn't know what to expect. Got a lesson in coins as well. I stack bullion coins - but that is about it - just in it for the silver. Cheers SK.

I stack bullion, predec and some numis. Very few though more to admire, you cant go wrong its silver, you like the design and has a chance to get a nice little premium. The last one you cant guarantee but first 2 reasons still there. Cheers

That's crazy! I love my silver but I just couldn't justify buying 1 for that. Surely that limits the number of buyers for it should one want to sell it!

Can I just check people's views on silver coins which incorporate colour?

After this coin I think colour coins took of in a big way, some look good others cant stand

There's quite a number of people who don't like coloured coins. They use a particular word to refer to silver coins which have been coloured (but can't for the life of me think what it is)

BTW interesting intro on Red Backs, never realised they were so small (but deadly)!!!
