Our First Dog Tokka

After spending months researching various dog breeds on youtube, we started to look at breeders and various shelters in our area. It was difficult for our family to come to a consensus vis a vis our options as our daughter has had dog allergies for years, albeit she is now in college and my husband has an "abhorrence" to curly haired dogs. So sadly, my quest was at a standstill.

I knew we needed a short haired medium sized dog that could suit our active lifestyle but found nothing available in nearby shelters or breeders. It seemed we could not find the perfect dog. Or at least a compromise but it often came down to the size and fur coat. Either it was not hypoallergenic or the coat was long and curly.

The summer found me busy with gardening and an ongoing slew of guests to entertain.

Once in a while, I would continue my search and would let my friends know how we almost adopted an Anatolian Shephard dog who would sleep outside in a -40-degree snowstorm and fight off wolves and bears on the island.

My family and friends would get a rise out of this knowing all too well that a dog like that would suffer in the city during the winter with no “job” to keep him busy.

In the end, when all our visit had gone home and life on the island had slowed down to a crawl, we bumped into friends at the marina who had just picked up a puppy. The puppy came straight into my arms and comfortably remained there while we exchanged pleasantries. The only thing I remember is how there was one more puppy left.

I asked my husband what his thought was on the little darling and he said to me… “We’ll revisit the idea of getting a dog next year”. Alright, I thought, at least I now know where we stand. He returned to the city and I was left on the Island with my bees and chickens, which was actually quite nice.

I thought nothing more of it until the next morning when I received a picture of a cutest little puppy with a note saying he had made the downpayment and we were to pick her up in a few days. All kinds of thoughts went through my mind.

"This is awesome, what a man I have and will I be a good fur mom?" but what excited me the most was the fact that I didn’t beg for the dog. I just let things evolve on their own. Something I believe is important in a relationship and in life in general.
