Facts about the Chinstrap Penguin
The chinstrap penguin lives on the coast of southern Pacific nations as well as off of the shores of the Antarctic Ocean. This particular breed of penguin has a thin black band that circles its head that makes it look like it was wearing a helmet and the black band is the chinstrap. This penguin also goes by the names ringed penguin as well as bearded penguin.
This chinstrap penguin has a body that is about 28 inches in length and weight between 6 and 11 pounds on average. The males are larger than the female chinstrap penguins. The adult chinstrap penguins have a black flipper with white tips and the inside is white. The face is reddish brown in color with a white chin and a small black bill. The legs are strong and there are pink webbed feet at the end.
The diet of the chinstrap penguins are similar to that of other creatures that live on the shore. They eat plenty of krill, shrimp, and squid. If needed they will swim off of the shore in order to get the food. The penguins have a coat that is waterproof that allows them to swim in the water no matter how cold it gets. These penguins have to go on land in order to lay their eggs. They will lay two eggs and the males and the females will take turns sitting on the eggs. They eggs will catch after approximately 37 days. The babies will stay in the nest for 30 days before joining their mates. When they are 60 days old the chicks begin to get their adult feathers.
The chinstrap penguin can survived in very cold temperatures . They can survive this cold weather due to the ability to store blubber under their skin. These penguins have a distinctive look to them and they are often seen in groups hunting for food.
