Superior Farms Slaughterhouse Vows To Change Procedures Following Undercover Investigation

in #animals6 years ago

Superior Farms is the company that has been tasked with supplying fresh meat to the National School Lunch Program, the U.S. military, and other venues like Kroger and Walmart.

They are known as the largest lamb producer in the entire country and thanks to the work of one whistleblower who captured hidden-video footage inside the slaughterhouse a few years ago, they have eventually been forced to face federal prosecution for their actions and adjust their business methods.

As a result of the investigation, Superior Farms will be required and has already agreed to reform their killing methods that were uncovered with the undercover investigation.

The company claimed to be using slaughter practices that were up to standard with both religious and federal law. Upon investigation however, that didn't turn out to be the case. An incredible amount of suffering was witnessed for the animals that are being processed through this facility. And for an establishment that is selling products that claim to be meeting certain standards, officially designated as a halal slaughter facility for example, it should outrage consumers to find out that they've been lied to about the products that they are buying.

Employees had been found intentionally and systematically inflicting unnecessary and additional pain against those animals at the facility.

The process that they are using to get the job done is profoundly inconsistent and ineffective, the designation that they give the meat is effectively rendered illegitimate because of it. Their practices have been found to violate the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act and many of those who are buying from the shelves of Walmart and Korger might not realize that they are buying meat that comes from a farm that has faced these accusations, that has been found engaging in such cruelty.

It was also alleged that "best buy" dates would routinely be scratched off and replaced on the meat products.

The animals being slaughtered here were essentially being tortured and were not being killed in a humane way, that is to try and reduce any and as much as suffering as possible for the animal. Their 2016 undercover investigation found multiple instances of failure to follow this policy, they failed to meet their promise of treating animals in a humane fashion. It's alleged that management with the farm had observed the wrongdoing on many occasions and never did anything to try and stop it.

Superior Farms was found to have entered into contracts based on false claims surrounding their products.

It was the work of a public advocacy organization, Compassion over Killing, that was behind the investigation, helping to uncover the lies, fraud, and torture, that's been taking place at Superior Farms.

Superior Farms sells their lamb meat products under a variety of names: Superior Farms, Farmer’s Mark, Cascade Creek, and Sabor a Rancho.

Aside from Walmart and Kroger, you can also find the products being sold on Amazon, QVC, Cabela’s, and Sysco.

Among the changes that Superior Farms will now have to meet include designating a Humane Handling Coordinator that will be tasked with ensuring compliance with humane slaughter rules. They will also be required to conduct training for all employees at the farm who are working in the live animal spaces so that they can be educated on humane handling practices for slaughter.

sickening, hadn't heard about that one yet!:(

yea this is such a horrible situation. It's as if, because people who have not done their own shadow work and fear death, have control over life and death of other sentient beings, this makes them authorities over the quality of life and death of these creatures and also brings out the bully in them. It's a bizarre psychological reaction to an already untenable situation. I wish people would use Temple Grandin's method of slaughter, if at all.
