RE: What Animal Left These Large Prints In Front Of Our Garage?

in #animals6 years ago

A fox is not that big and is normally the size of a medium dog. I would say @gamer00 is probably right unless it is a big fox. You don't have any wolves around that part do you?

Sort:

There are only 165-190 wolves in the entire country, the size of which is about 330,000 km2. I made a Facebook post for crowdsourcing purposes on this and a friend of mine suggested that it could be a lynx. That's a pretty good guess. I compared the prints to lynx those of lynx and it looks like a pretty good candidate. Check those footprints out: https://www.flickr.com/groups/1386715@N23/

Looks similar in size and a close match. Obviously out looking for food.

Our cat is not going out after dark. She'd not be an easy catch by no means, at least comparatively speaking, but another cat 3-4 times her size might go for it if hungry enough.

I just thought about that and why else would the Linx be sniffing around and showing any attention to that area.

I found our cat's feces in the snow when I was clearing a path to the side door of the garage a couple of weeks ago. The wild animal must have picked up on the smell. I have no idea whether lynxes can tell what species frozen feline feces under 20-30 cm of snow belong to. Who knows, it might have been looking for a mate if it was a lynx. But most likely food.
