Alberta Weather

in #animals7 years ago

In Alberta we can have the weirdest weather.  The saying goes "April showers bring May flowers".  This is a very old saying indeed.  We are at least getting some warmer temperatures however we had a snow storm again last night.  About 3 days ago we were at +9 and now we are getting snow.  This up and down weather can go on for another month.  There are many times where we will have snow at the end of May.

The great thing about all of the percipitation is our house collects all of our water that we use.  So we will have plenty of water this spring and summer.  It is just coming as snow instead of rain.

We are between puddles and snow.  The puddles are almost the same depth as the snow depending where you walk.  This last snowfall is full of water.

As you can see it is weighing down the young tree.  Some of our winter snows are very dry and there is hardly any moisture in the snow.

The animals seem to be handling the weather just fine.  They are happy that it is warmer.  This is Sugar and her last years girl.  They are huddled up trying to stay dry.

This is Elle she is due to have some kids at the end of the month. I could only get a side view but you can see she is quite wide.  She will probably have two kids this year.  We have to feed the goats in many places in the pen because she is hogging all the food and trying to keep all the food to herself.  She spends quite a bit of time guarding all the food spots.  It is quite funny really.

Our duck finally had ducklings. There are 9 of the sweet little ones. She tried back in January to hatch but it was too cold.  Today we will get some wood shavings, food and water in there for them.  Right now they are living off the yolk from the egg.  They can survive three days with out food and water just by living off the yolk.  Idealy it is best to get food and water to them as soon as possible.

So much snow yet! Reminds me of my childhood. Big melts!

The critters all look happy in their cozy homes.

I enjoyed this window into your world.

Hugs to you both!

Thanks we are now in a huge melt. It is now in the double digits and theres is water everywhere. The critters are much happier than they were a couple of months ago.

Hugs back at ya. :)

The animals look fantastic. I can hardly wait to see the new kids. And the duckling is adorable. I am so excited that you are now able to have ducks.

What a contrast we are experiencing with two-foot drifts of snow in most places in our yard and huge puddles of water making a muddy mess in the driving areas. It is just weather. We are blessed to live where we do. Things are always changing. Tomorrow it will look completely different. Thanks for sharing.

The animals are doing so well now. They are happy that it is spring. The baby ducks are so cute you should come over and see them . Yes we are blessed, and it is only water. We are happy the tanks are full now. That takes the pressure off. You are so right tomorrow will look completely different. Hope to see you soon. :)

Wow, that snow is so deep, I guess it's more than 20 cm as we can see those marks of footsteps, is it?

However cold it is, those scenes of ice all over the trees and ground looks so beautiful.

I know, for you guys it's a routine one, but for someone like me who are from hot humid areas as in India, those pictures look so cool.

Just hope as you said "April showers bring May flowers", we will see some updates soon about the flowers and trees.

Thanks for sharing @carey-page. :)

Hey there @coolguy123. Yes, the snow pack this winter was closer to 60cm. With the snow melt we are about 30cm right now. So about half way there. Should see most of the snow melt this week as we expect temperatures to hit in the mid teens and with the sun so high and hot, it will go fast and cause spring flooding. Will be wonderful to see the land be rejuvenated with all this new water!

wow, 60 cm is too much, so you can't even walk in that much snow with long boots also I think. That shows the beauty of god, we see bigger cracks in earth and farmers keep looking at the sky for rain here!!

Good to know there will be temperature increase this week.

Thanks for pitching in Rob, I am thankful to you and @carey-page for these updates, so much to know about other places and so much to learn about the ways of using the available resources in a better way.

I am glad that you find our weather interesting. Just as I find your area and weather just as intersting. Some days it would be nice to visit a place like India. Not sure if I can handle the heat. Being so fair I would probably burn to a crips in a day.

I think we are due for those April showers next week. That will green things up. Then it will be totally different pictures for you.

Well, I invite you to come to India whenever you get time, winter will be pleasant one, but I am sure you guys will love even the summer although it might be like total change in the temperature for you.

green is the life for not just humans but for animals, so hopefully the next time you write about environment, I hope I will see about the rain and the greenery.

It's election time in my state here, so lot's of promises, lot's of last minute works and that usual you said this but you didn't do it kind of attitude among the politicians trying to lure the voters. I still feel all the politicians are same except few countable ones who tr to do something even if not 100%.

Ah election time. What fun. Yes I sometimes feel sorry for the politicians especially the ones who really do want to change things. Then they get into office and have to follow the rules that are set by others. It must be quite difficult for them. They do get to make some changes at least. This is how the world works for right now. I feel there will be change and then they will really be able to make the changes that they want.

Our politicians over here age so much when they are in office. The job must be so stressful. It is hard to watch.

Well, yes, we hope so and atleast someone stands out of that usual politicians who are there to just loot the money from the people.

Yes, the job is stressful, but it also means makes the politicians more corrupt as age old politicians of over 80 years also try to become ministers which is a pity thing.

Almost all the politicians are corrupt only here.

Well said. Not sure what I can add to that. You have said it all. :) Have an awesome day

I am sure it's the same over there as well, because politics has become a business now.

People spend money like anything during elections either by giving money to voters or by giving them some gifts and then when they win elections, they try to recover that money through corruption or looting the money which is stipulated for development activities.

It has become a regular thing here and if some honest person contests election, either he won't get enough votes or even if he wins, other politicians tries to suppress him.

Very disgusting one.

Yes it is the same here. At least people are waking up to the corruption. I am so grateful that more and more people are moving off grid and using alternative methods of doing things. I think that it is us moving away from their systems that will be the change that is needed here on mother earth. Being peaceful and just not supporting the corrupt system will change the world. At least that is what I think. It is hard to fight with people who are peaceful.

What a great post!! thank you so much for a glimpse in your part of the world! Love those knee deep foot prints! we have those same ones here!
Your goats look amazing, and avia is in love with your ducklings. That is a good sized clutch to be hatched!! Spring is on its way!

Will the water get much higher? do you figure? will the buildings be good? not take on the water?

Always something to prepare for. :)
Thank you for sharing, I am pretty sure that you will be heading into busier times!

Thank you! Yes it will be easier for us to share what our environment looks like now that it is not just pictures of white snow. I do hope the melt is on over there.

We are now looking after water flow and watching for flooding. I don't think that we will be at risk because of the way our land is set. Maybe I will do some more pics before the next snowfall. Are you having flooding issues? I am sure you have written about it I just need to get my technology more in order. I have gotten a new computer but now I have to set up all my friends again so I can read what is going on in their world.

I am glad that Avia loves the ducklings. I will work on taking more pics for her. They are not under mama as much now. They are so cute. It is hard to get close. Their mama really hisses at me. We are now waiting for baby goats. One of our mama's looks like she might kid out here within the week. She is really close. Spring is so exciting.

We all are heading into busier times now. I think it is time to get up earlier so I can get on to steemit before the day begins. The days of sleeping in are coming to a fast end. I will be milking here again and that starts the days early.

I am so glad that you got the water diverted!! whew! water...such an amazing force of being! so much memory she holds!
Do you have any baby goats yet? We are getting excited here!! The hens are starting to sit. hopefully we will have little fluff bottoms!!!
I am so far behind in responding. Want to get that back into check soon, there is just so much good stuff to do!!

Yes getting the water diverted was fun. Now we know what will happen with a quick melt. It is good to know these things. These are great times to work out the little details. 90 % of our snow was gone in 3 days.

No baby goats yet. My girls are ready It is just when they decide to drop. I actually thought they would kid out by now. We have been watching them every hour and nothing. I figure just when I decide to stop looking for a bit is when they will have them.

It is good your hens are able to sit on the eggs. That is so great that your hens will do that. I think it is best that the hens do all the work, just as nature indended. We have a weasel stealing the eggs. I had 5 in a nest to for the hen to sit on and when I checked them that evening all the eggs were gone. So I think we are just not going to have chicks this year.

I agree about being so far behind. There is so much to do now it is hard to keep up with steemit. I am not sure how some of the other off gid people do it.
