Rafting in the 2nd deepest canyon in the world! - Montenegro
Yesterday I had an amazing adventure. I went on a rafting boat in the Tara river in Montenegro. This river made the 2ND deepest canyon (after the grand canyon off course) in the world!
The day before yesterday we already had a look from a 150 meters high bridge that goes over the river. This is the view from the bridge:
The bridge itself:
So, yesterday morning we drove down to the meeting point where we met our guide Vladimir. He was in a bit of a hurry, so we quickly packed our stuff, got our equipment and drove with a jeep with the raft on top to the place where we went on the water.
After a few rules and practice strokes with the raft the trip started. I was in front with my brother which was really fun in the rapids. The river wasnt so wild this time of the year, but that gave us more oppertunity to look at the surroundings. And that was amazing:
The edges of the canyon had an average altitude of around 1 km (0.65 mile) with the highest point at 1.333 km ( 1 mile), making it the 2nd highest canyon in the world.
But the Tara river has more records. One small spring, leading into the Tara river is officially the smallest river in the world. It is 177 meters long, and we took a small break at this spring, also to fill up out water bottles since the water was perfectly drinkable.
The spring comes up above ground through underground channels. It is a really strange sight to see a river starting all of a sudden in the middle of some rocks.
The tiny river just pops up here.
We continued our journey through the canyon with its super high green topped cliffs. I never even knew that europe has these extreme wild nature so my mind was totally blown.
Our next stop was at a small beach where we could swim in the cold river, and do some cliff-jumping. Off course, I went for it, and jumped off the 5 meter high cliff together with my brother.
Yes, man can do it as well :P
In total we rafted for 6,5 hours, including stops and lunchbreak. After these 6,5 hours we were pretty tired and and reached our exit point. This point was the deepest point of the canyon so I was really happy to see that as well. It is just amazing how deep the canyon is, and if you visit Europe, I defenitely recommend you to visit Montenegro, because I have been in more then 20 countries in Europe, but I have never seen this kind of ancient, extreme nature in any of the other countries.
The canyon from a view point where we walked to a few days ago:
You can really see how high the canyon is from this point.
A selfie to say: thanks for reading!
