Black goose or in its scientific name Cygnus atratus is one of the geese found in the Cygnus genus. Large adult birds, with a length reaching 130cm. All the feathers are black with the exception of white wing feathers, a red beak with a white line at the end and a gray foot. Black Goose has a very long neck and forms the letter "S". Female birds are similar and smaller in size than male birds. The swans have gray feathers.
The population Black swans are scattered on the southern coast of Australia, southeast and in Tasmania. This species is found mostly in clusters in lakes and wetlands in southern Australia. Unlike other aquatic birds, the Black Geese do not migrate and settle where they hatch.
Almost all black swans are monogamous species. The two mothers together raise a swan and nest in the middle of a shallow lake. The food consists of water plants.
The black swan was first discovered by Willem de Vlamingh in 1697 in western Australia. The discovery of this species caused a great interest among the Europeans, who at that time thought that all the swans were white.
The black swan is the official emblem of the province of Western Australia. This species is protected by the Australian government and evaluated as low risk in the IUCN Red List.
