COSTA'S HUMMINGBIRD IN ALASKA
In early September, I thought that I heard an abnormally large bumblebee fly past my head. I gave it no thought, and continued on my work in the garden.
BzzzzzZZZZiP!
Bigger than a bee. It was a tiny hummingbird, no larger than my thumb.
Running inside I got my camera and gear, and over the next 30 minutes proceeded to take nearly 800 photos of the bird. Posting online, he was identified as a immature Costa's, and in all reality, he was supposed to be in Mexico. (Talk about not asking for directions).
I assumed he would die with the winter approaching, and temperatures that he would not be able to handle. However, now as I post this, he was seen three days ago at a heated feeder in town. It's been about 5 degrees F (-15 C) for the past two weeks. This bird is absolutely incredible.
