Great Blue Heron

2E5A5946.jpg

On the way back from our trip we stopped by a few places on the shore in search of birds.

At one park I saw this Great Blue Heron fly up from the water. I watched its flight and thought it came down for a landing behind the trees in front of us. As I strolled over I found it perched on the roof of a building by the water.

I've only seen this bird up close a few times. This bird stands at roughly 5 feet 3 inches (160 cm). An amazing fact I found on All About Birds is that even though they are so tall, they only weigh about 5-6 lbs! Isn't that startling? The adaptations birds have that allow them to fly are simply wonderful. The more I learn about them the more I love them. :)

We have a lot of Heron in our neighborhood, but they must not be Great Blue Heron because they are more like two to three feet tall.

That's really cool. Where about do you live?

About halfway between Houston and Galveston. I like this time of year because of the birds migrating through. I just heard a Barred Owl hooting. They are nesting and you can hear them calling back and forth. Pretty cool!

I have a white one of those that eat the crawfish in the lake at the condo. Beautiful Birds

That is really cool. Have you gotten any photos?

I do, but not on this computer. If i find them ill upload them. Have a great day, just followed you. :)

Thank you. If you do upload them, feel free to come message me a link on one of my posts. I would love to see them.

I used to kayak a small river every year, a lot. The second year I noticed a Heron's nest way up in a tree. That year I lucked out big time. Not only did I see several Blue Heron's but there were also Green Herons and a Great White Egret. I was so excited! But I have never seen one on a roof! LOL Thanks for sharing.

I love the seeming uniqueness of it sitting on the roof. It really does look out of place. That's amazing about your kayak birding adventures. Egrets are so beautiful.

Nice that you were able to get so close. The blue herons are so statuesque. Love to photograph the ones I have found around me.

Do you know why they perch on one leg?

Your photos are breathtaking. Are you self taught?

I believe it is to conserve energy because their legs are not feathered, they lose heat more quickly than their body does. Tucking up a leg helps stop heat from escaping so fast through that area.

Thanks, when I first seen one standing like that I felt bad for it thinking that something had happened to it.

I haven't taken any formal classes or anything but when I got into photography back in 2014 I read a few books and watched a ton of videos on photography. Mostly it's just getting out with the camera and practicing.

That is really awesome. Getting practice is what I'm trying to do.

I have actually seen a bird with only one leg hopping along the shore of a park pond. It seemed to be doing just fine though, and it flew away when it was done without trouble. That was before I had any sort of good camera or binocular set-up and I don't have a photo.

People think of GBH as a bird you see by a wetland or on the ground. They roost in nests high in trees, and are competent at perching on structures. I like this sort of "King of the Mountain" photos. Just did a steepshot of a Canada Goose on top of a barn.

I did think it was funny to see it perching on the roof, but it is a good vantage point. :)

Awesome Work!
