Macroglossum stellatarum, known as Hummingbird Hawk-moth or sometimes Hummingmoth, is a Sphingidae species. A long trunk and drifting behavior, accompanied by a humming sound, makes it look very much like a bird while feeding on flowers. This should not be confused with moths called hummingbird moths in North America, the genus Hemaris, members of the same family and with similar appearances and behaviors. The resemblance to the hummingbirds is an example of convergent evolution. It flies during the day, especially in bright sunlight, but also in the afternoons, dawn, and even in the rain, which is unusual for hawkmoths and even diurnal visual abilities have been extensively researched, and has proven to have relatively good ability to learn color.
