Kenya Announces Possible Death Penalty for Poachers

in #animal6 years ago (edited)

Kenya is home to many wonderful animals such as rhinos, elephants, cheetahs and many more, but unfortunately they are being killed by poachers either for their fur or ivory that is then sold for ridiculous prices, most of it goes to China where ivory is reportedly sold for $1000 a pound, rhino horns is sold for around $30,000 a pound, that's more than gold. They use this in oriental medicine. Even though China banned ivory the 1st of January 2018, it is still sold on the black market.

Since 2013 according to the Wildlife Conservation Act poachers could face life sentence or a $200,000 fine. But as this hasn't stopped poaching Kenya are taking action and are implementing the Death Penalty for poachers if they are caught. Kenya hope to increase their wildlife crime prosecutors from two to fourteen so the poachers get an appropriate prosecution, they are hoping to achieve this thanks to the collaboration of the conservation organization "Space for Giants"

This proposal has been very controversial, it's been praised on one side and has received criticism on the other. The United Nations opposes the death penalty as it wants a phasing-out of capital punishment worldwide. This announcement by Kenya is a bold one but it could be a step forward to prevent the extinction of these wonderful animals that don't deserve to be poached for their tusks or fur.
