Anger Management

We all have a right to our opinions -- as long as we respect each other and allow others theirs!

Once we say something hurtful to another, we can never take it back. There are some of us who have an issue with venting, and then regretting it later. Sure, we can apologise, but words are very powerful and strike very deep in the human psyche. Because others are doing that to you, (at school, work, friends, etc.), never justifies us taking it out on others.

We all need to practice anger management at some point in our lives. There are many techniques for this. Hit a pillow or scream into a pillow. Deep breathing and imagining a peaceful stream. Write it out without anyone reading it. There have been times when I was angry at someone that I wrote it all down first, and then revised it to a less hurtful version, to send them.

If you are into some sports; that is excellent for getting out your frustrations. Also, developing a plan as to how to maturely handle and stop other people mistreating you is good. If people are hurting you at school, work etc., I understand how awful that must be; as there is no escape. Problem solving within that situation is a real challenge. Counseling can be helpful in developing a plan; from a school counselor, a trusted friend, etc.  Cognitive behavioral therapy is a good way to go and it works.

Setting healthy boundaries with others is important also. We should never allow others to take advantage of us, or us, them. Part of anger management is to set clear expectations and limits before things get out of hand, and if they do start getting out of hand, practice expressing oneself in a positive, constructive way. Often many things are misunderstandings. Healthy, honest communication is  also a key factor in anger management.

What are some ways that you think are helpful in managing anger?
