This modern city was founded by Alexander the Great

Alexander founded a lot of cities during his campaign, and he named most of them Alexandria.

In 330 BCE, he destroyed a Persian fortress in Arachosia, a Persian satrapy (like a province) near its eastern border. None of the main Alexander chroniclers mention that he founded a city here, but we know he did because of some other references. The city became the seat of Alexander's new satrapy, then after Alexander's death his general Seleucus took it as part of his empire, then the Mauryan empire led by Chardragupta Maurya in 305 BCE. From there it changed hands many times, since it's in such an important strategic location. Islamic conquerors, Mongols, British - most of the great conquerors in history held it at one point or another. Even the Americans did.

Today, you might recognize it as the city of Kandahar, in Afghanistan.
