An old take on socialism

I heard a different view on why socialism would not work. I don't want to say new, because the idea was from Frederick Douglass in the late 1800's. It's actually a fairly simple principle, but some of the most powerful ideas are the simplest. The idea is people only work for two reasons: to get paid, and to avoid punishment. I think this still applies today though. When I was young I cleaned my room(worked) to avoid punishment, and now that I am older I work to get paid. So, for socialism to work you have to make slaves of everybody.
