I so wish space was a viable option for escaping away from modern society. I think the first people to reside permanently in space/Mars will be people who want to escape this shitstorm that has engulfed the world.
We are going to face political struggles which ever plan we inhabit. This is how humans mentality has always been.. Sad but true!!
But we can still make it better than earth. A lot of the problems we face today are due to the historical baggage of the past. A new society there would not have those problems. The communication delay between planets will help keep them it seperated from Earth.
Hmmm... Don't you think humans will still fight over many needs (leadership, quality of life, availability of resources) even while out there on some habitable plant? May be a socialistic approach to human life on other planets could work...
