I've got one major slice of it boiled down - Cognitive Dissonance: a person who holds a belief they feel precious and will go to any avenue to protect it... any. You have this idea and refusento let it go, thereby going to any extreme to validate it, name calling like "racist" "biggot" "fascist" all of them fall into this category. I could write a post on this subject (you know what I'm going to), so I'll keep it brief. Most people lack self confidence and you bringing up a point that diminishes theirs, it is seen as an attack on them personally. Some people can never been debated for this very fact.
