I think that the main disadvantage of NEM is the fact it is not providing any kind of virtual machine. NEM provides an API to interact with the blockchain, but it is only allowing developers to access accounts and tokens -NEM assets are called mosaics- and sending messages. There is no way to store data in the same way Ethereum is able to do.

NEM is a platform for building applications over the blockchain, not on it.
