Oh ja dames en heren, u hebt hem gevonden: de Film Die Je Gezien Moet Hebben! We hadden helemaal niet gepland om naar de cinema te gaan, we gingen de stad in om sushi te eten, maar een ijzige wind besliste dat voor ons. Als fan van Frances McDormand (Fargo) wist ik meteen welke film ik wou zien et voilà, de eerste keer in jàren dat ik nog eens écht een goede film in de cinema zag.

Het verhaal

Mildred Hayes (Oscar®winnares Frances McDormand) is een jaar geleden haar tienerdochter verloren in een gruwelijke onopgeloste zaak. Omdat de politie volgens haar niet voldoende actie onderneemt, laat ze drie 'in your face' boodschappen op reclameborden plaatsen langs de weg richting haar dorp, gericht aan William Willoughby (Oscar® genomineerde Woody Harrelson), het hoofd van de politie. Het politiekorps bestaat uit een racistisch zootje ongeregeld, waaronder Dixon (gewéldig gespeeld door Sam Rockwell), een moederskindje met een IQ van 69 en losse handjes, maar het héle dorp schaart zich achter het politiekorps en er begint een oorlog tussen Mildred en 'de rest'.

Waarom moet je gaan kijken

Het personage van Mildred is gewoon 'Da Bomb', echt waar. Heel de film door heeft ze dezelfde outfit aan en als een echte warrior, een leeuwin die voor haar kind vecht, gaat ze op niet-diplomatieke wijze de strijd aan met alles en iedereen. Ze onderneemt domme acties, maar toch heb je sympathie voor haar queeste en hoop je dat ze de dader vindt. De beelden van het dorp (gefilmd in North Carolina) zijn waanzinnig mooi en de muziek trouwens ook. Het begin alleen al, echt prachtig! De symboliek van die 3 eenzame Billboards met hun gruwelijke boodschap op een weg waar bijna niemand doorkomt, middenin de prachtige natuur, het doet je iets. Hoewel het onderwerp luguber is, is de film dat niet. Geen gratuite scenes over de moord op de dochter dus. Dat is ook niet nodig, dat wat er gebeurd is heel erg is, voel je zo ook wel. Ik heb trouwens nog nooit zoveel mensen horen lachen bij een dramafilm! Je moet wel een beetje van zwarte humor houden :) 

Thema

Regisseur van de film is Oscar®winnaar Martin McDonagh (‘In Bruges’) die heel duidelijk als thema hoop, en de mogelijkheid tot vergiffenis en verandering meegeeft. En dat is exact wat ik voelde toen de film eindigde (Wat?! Nu al?! Die 2 uur zijn voorbij gevlogen!): HOOP.

Tot slot: je kan gerust wachten tot hij op Netflix of een ander medium komt, maar dan mis je wel de mooie beelden op groot scherm natuurlijk.

3 Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri (English)

Oh yes, ladies and gentlemen, you have found it: the Movie You Must See! We had not planned to go to the cinema, we went into the city to eat sushi, but an icy wind decided for us. As a fan of Frances McDormand (Fargo) I knew immediately which film I wanted to see et voilà, the first time in years that I really saw a good movie in the cinema.

 

The Story

Mildred Hayes (Oscar® winner Frances McDormand) lost her teenage daughter almost a year ago in a gruesome unsolved case. Because, according to her, the police do not take enough action, she puts three 'in your face' messages on billboards along the road towards her village, directed at William Willoughby (Oscar® nominated Woody Harrelson), the head of police. The police force consists of a racist bunch of unruly, including Dixon (played fantastic by Sam Rockwell), a mommy's boy with an IQ of 69 and an aggression issue, but the whole village is behind the police force and a war starts between Mildred and 'the rest '.

Why you should go and watch 

The character of Mildred is simply 'Da Bomb', really. Throughout the whole film she wears the same outfit and as a true warrior, a lioness fighting for her child, she is fighting non-diplomatically with everything and everyone. She undertakes stupid actions, but you still have sympathy for her quest and hope she finds the murderer.The images of the village (filmed in North Carolina) are amazingly beautiful, as is the music. The beginning alone, really beautiful! The symbolism of those three lonely billboards with their horrible message, on an abandoned road in the middle of the beautiful nature, it gives you shivers.Although the subject is lugubrious, the film is not. No gratuitous scenes about the murder of the daughter. There's no need for that, what happened is very bad, you can read that between the lines. By the way, I have never heard so many people laughing at a drama film! But you have to like a bit of black humor :) 

Theme

Director of the movie is Oscar® winner Martin McDonagh ('In Bruges') who clearly set hope and the possibility for forgiveness and change as a theme. And that is exactly what I felt when the film ended (What ?! Already ?! Those 2 hours have flown by!):HOPE.

In conclusion: you can of course wait until this movie comes to Netflix or another medium, but then you will miss the beautiful images on a big screen.
