Albanian Music Artists Descend on 2017 MTV EMAs The 2017 MTV Europe Music Awards, dubbed the "Albanian edition" by Kosovo media, saw four artists with Albanian heritage - including Kosovo-born pop singer Rita Ora - participating in the star-studded event

This year's MTV Europe Music Awards, held in London's Wembley Arena on Sunday, included four internationally acclaimed artists with Albanian origin on its list of attendees, leading media in Kosovo to dub this the "Albanian edition" of the event.

Pop star Rita Ora, who was chosen as the 2017 host of the awards show, is originally from the Kosovo capital, Pristina, but her family relocated to the United Kingdom in 1991, citing political reasons for their move.

Ora is the second artist of Albanian descent to have the honour of hosting the European edition of the MTV Music Awards, following US-born Bebe Rexha in 2016.

“Last year Bebe Rexha, this year Rita Ora, Abanian girls taking over,” a fan tweeted when Ora was announced as the show's host.

Rexha herself also delivered some kind words to Ora in a video message ahead of the show, saying, “from one Albanian girl to another, I know you’re going to kill it”.

Dua Lipa, another artist from Pristina who started her career in London, took home the gong for "Best New Artist" on the night, while also being nominated for "Best Look".

She was described on MTV EMA's official website as “an amazing young talent with a great story and voice to match”, while the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, also gave her a shoutout after she recieved her award, tweeting that it was "Great to see Londoner Dua Lipa picking up the award for Best New Act”.

Singer Ermal Meta, who was born in Fier in southwest Albania but whose family relocated to Bari in Italy, was awarded "Best Italian Act", while Swiss rapper of Albaian descent, Xen (whose real name is Shkelzen Kastrati) was also in attendance.
