At Sundown: When the Moon Rules the Sky
(image from pixabay)
He rose from his bed with a sly grin tearing across his face. Last night had been a blast. He'd gone to bed around 3am and spent the rest of the night tossing and turning in excitement. The question is, what had kept him awake till 3am? Well, you're about to find out.
3 days earlier
The sun began setting around 6pm, allowing itself to be covered by clouds and giving way for a crepuscular sky that signaled twilight. In a matter of time, the moon began peeping to signal to the sun that it was its turn to shine its light, however dim, on earth. Gradually, the sun relunctantly surrendered to nature, paving way for the moon and the spreading darkness. Subsequently, the moon took it's place in the middle of the sky, surrounded by a million stars.
At this point, It was already 10pm and Teddy Scott was already in bed. After playing video games almost all day, he went to bed around 9pm. He had no official employment per say. He was a freelance web deigner and programmer, cryptotrader and blogger. All the work he ever did was on the computer. Right from when he was just 8, he had made an habit of sitting in front of laptops or computer systems all day everyday after school. Today though, he had played the video game he'd just recently developed all day to test run it and check for bugs before offering it for sale to gaming companies.
As the sky darkened into pitch darkness, accentuating the presence of the moon and what seemed like a bi-zillion stars, Teddy's eye's opened suddenly then his pupils became blue and cold as ice.
Somewhere on the other side of town, Debby changed into the pink pyjamas her mum had bought her last month. It had been an hectic day at work and she needed some sleep but she wouldn't miss her favorite show, Jane the Virgin, for anything in the world. She sat on the ground on front of her flat screen tv after swapping the heels she had worn to work for flipflops. Though the living room was fully equipped with sofas and cushion chairs, she preferred to sit on the floor right in front of the tv set like a year old baby totally enthralled by and glued to Spongebob Squarepants.
A creaking sound coming from the porch jolted Debby awake. She had fallen asleep after barely two minutes of Jane the Virgin and now the episode was over. Great! She would have to wait to watch the marathon when it would be rebroadcast on Sunday. Another creak brought her back to reality. She looked around with her bleary eyes wondering where the sound was coming from. Seeing and hearing nothing, she convinced herself it was all in her head. But as she stood up to head into her room, the door swung open by itself and a sudden cold breeze surged past Debby, giving her goosebumps.
"Who's there?", Debby whispered with fear, walking towards the door and without waiting for a response shut the door close and bolted it.
She then turned around, leaned against the door and sighed. As she raised her feet to step forward and go to bed, the lights flickered and then went off. A flurry of shadows moved past her. Jolted, she turned a round in fear. Suddenly, moonlight seared through the window and formed a spotlight on a figure in front of her, she screamed.
The figure snarled and darted towards her. It was some strange creature with the look of a wolf but it stood on two feets. It was hairy and had sharp claws. It raised its claws as if to strike her but as soon as she fearfully raised her hand in defense to shield herself, he disappeared. Too stunned to move or walk into her bedroom, she slid gently and sat on the ground with her back against the door and her hands covering her ears.
The next day
Debby woke up the next morning tired and still shivering from last night's scare. It took her some courage to get up and when she did, she felt as though she had been by a bus as pain enveloped her from head to toe. With much effort, she dragged herself into the bathroom and took a shower which brought her much relief. It was Saturday and she didn't have to go to work. She well hoped she could sleep properly at least.
After toasting and eating bread in the kitchen, she sat at her workdesk with her laptop in front of her and opened her browser. She couldn't get the image she had seen the previous night off her head. She browsed on and on about it until she slept off.
A knock at the door woke debby up around 3pm. The continuous rapping signalled that this visitior had been at the door for a while and couldn't wait to get in.
"Who's there?", Debby called, rubbing her face with her palm and heading towards the door.
"Darren", an husky voice replied from the other side of the door.
Darren was her twin brother and he had always made an habit of spending five hours with her on Saturdays. They'd play games and gist. It was always something she looked forward to but had forgotten all about this time because of last night's scare.
"Hey", she said as she opened the door and let him walk in.
"Do you know how long I was at the door?", He asked, ignoring her greeting
"A minute or two?"
"An hour!"
"Yeah, right.", she answered with sacarsm in her tone as she flung her body across the sofa.
"I'm serious", he said furrowing his brow and sitting down "and by the way, where's your phone, I kept calling and calling".
"I probably dropped it somewhere", Debby said then realised she hadn't seen her phone since last night.
She then began to recount her experience last night to her twin brother who only managed to listen with a straight face for less than a minute before bursting into laughter at her incredible tale.
"Yeah, real funny," she thought to herself figuring no sane person would believe her.
"Would you mind shutting the windows and doors?", Debby hollered at Darren, her eyes fixated on the tv in front of her.
She had managed to convince him to stay for the night. Though he thought this was because she had missed him, but she actually felt the creature from the previous night would revisit her and she didn't want to be alone when that happened.
A roar came from the back of the house and Darren ran in and rushed into the kitchen. A wolf dashed in right after Darren and made straight for Debby. Startled she fell to the ground and the wolf stood over her, snarling. Darren ran out with a stick on fire and chased the wolf out. Though the wolf was really already on its way out. Still on the ground, Debby looked to her right and saw her phone. The wolf had come to return her phone to her and it was probably the same creature from last night. She ran outside, brushing past Darren who was coming to ask her how she felt, and looked up. She was right. It was a full moon.
The creature was a werewolf and became a full wolf because of the full moon. It had been mostly wolf and a bit human last night because the moon was almost full. She wondered what it would look like tomorrow and for the first time, she found herself hoping he would come back
THE NEXT DAY
Debby kept looking out the window into the night sky but for the first time, she cared more about the moon than the stars. The moon seemed to be more of a cresent and Debby figured the creature would be more human tonight. She would however only find out if the creature came visiting.
And just as she had hoped, it came. She had left the front door open on purpose to allow it in and she watched as what seemed like a man walked in. It seemed perplexed and began trying to pick up her scent and find her. She stepped out to save it the trouble and he darted towards her. Yes, he, not it... it seemed like a man. A very handsome and good looking man.
He walked slowly towards her and looked even more handsome as he did. But his eyes seemed to be colder than an iceberg but as he neared her and she looked straight in its eyes, it seemed like the ice melted both in his and between them, paving way for a strange intimate heat to build up between them. Her lips shivered and her goosebumps disappeared while the creature stood motionless before her. The next thing she knew, she was kissing him.
Present day
Debby whispered and Teddy turned around to look at the beautiful woman with whom he had spent the previous night. He had fallen in love with her body immediately he set his eyes on her so he guessed he could call it love at first sight. But he'd loved her because she'd looked like a savoury meal. He'd hoped to devour her and he had, just in a different way from how he was thinking.
He had somewhat become attracted to her as if he was being pulled by a magnet and each time he'd wanted to eat her, the ice in his heart would melt and he would return home, transforming back to an human pretty early.
"Are you going to become that thing again", she asked him as he neared the bed.
"You'll never know", he snarled, his eyes glistening.
But deep down he knew become that thing again at SUNDOWN
For the night is dark and full of terrors
And when the sun goes down, it unleashes horrors
The wolves will howl and the owls will hoot
And no mortal man dares to lurk around on foot
This story is totally a work of fiction, any similarities to actual incidents is impossible
OR IS IT?
Author's note
I'm usually not the type to write about myths and all that. But, for the first time as a writer, I chose to explore a terrain I'm not familiar with and I hope that I did well enough.
The story was entirely written by me and all the images except the first one (which I got from pixabay) were drawn by me and then shot with my Samsung galaxy grand smartphone
with love,
@ajremy (the teen with steam for steem)
Thanks for visiting my blog. Did you love this post? Then what are you waiting for?
Awesome pencil work.
Proudly Nigerian...@ajremy you just proved a remarkable feat in fictional writing.
Keep it up, Bro.
Lol. Thanks bro. You're making me feel like I'm about to win a national award like CON ,OFR or something. Lol
@ajremy
This is good to know that a nigerian writer could be this imaginative in writing fictions on werewolf not to mention the good art work. Bravo!
I have this feeling that you attempted to summarise the story. Please take your time and make this a full series. I would like to see a different ending from the usual norms of humans falling in love with other imaginary creatures at first sight.
Yes. It's actually my first time exploring this type of writing. I'll see what I can do about writing something like this again. Perhaps horror next time
Woooowwww!!!! I couldn't bring myself to a halt when I starting reading. For a moment I thought he would do what other werewolf' would do (Kill or transform her to his kind). Great story though. Nice drawings too.😉
Thanks a lot b. A small token coming your way soon. As in extra for you oh
