The “WOMAN”
I have friends.. women.. educated
who chose the "traditional role" of a house-wife
Is Women's Day for those kind of women too?
And while we might say, "Yes"
Is it really?
I've felt like an alien
in organizational discussions
which is so skewed towards
maternity leave, creche, career after child
most diversity interventions, are focused on this sub-group
While it fuels business of, women-centric recruitment firms
it leaves out, an increasing population of women who
choose to remain single and childless (latter, even if married)
Portrayal of a liberated woman too, is of, one who
-is highly career-oriented
-studies STEM subjects
-swears, has tattoos, smokes, drinks
And primarily urban.
What about those who
- are happy being a housewife
- like arty subjects
- are more "girly"
Those in villages.
Problem is not with us being.. this type or that type
Problem is when we are all reduced to.. the same type
Problem is not, breaking stereotypes
Problem is, creating newer ones
Kareena Kapoor Khan hosts a show
"What women want"
and there is a simple answer to it.
What women want.. are all different things.
I don't know what Women's Day
means to you
To me it means, remembering..
That "women" is a, plural entity
We must not reduce it to a, singular identity.
