AIR-CLINIC WRITING CONTEST :Mosquitoes and the African man
Will you come over tonight? Tolu asked Remi. They had exams coming up so they had to study.
I will, Remi said. They bid each other farewell as they headed home.
Tolu was sitting in the balcony when see saw Remi approaching ,that's early she thought. Remi was what you would describe as the typical African woman because she never kept to time.
Once Remi got to Tolu's house, the first thing that caught her attention was the door, It was wide open .
Why is your door open by this time of the day? Asked Remi.
Madam, so you didn't see me here? You can't even say hello first.
I'm sorry, it's just that when I saw the door opened, all I could think of was the number of mosquitoes that must have entered your room. You know those things cause malaria right?
Ok ma, I've heard you but Mosquito no dey kill African man.I kept my door opened for fresh air to come in, you know there's no steady power supply in this country. Can we go inside now or you don't want to come into my mosquito infested room? Remi teased Tolu.
The next day at school, Remi could not find Tolu so she decided to go to her house to see her. On getting there, she met her dad who told her that Tolu woke up feeling sick and had been admitted at the hospital where she was receiving treatment for malaria.
The Doctor took time to educate Tolu and her parents. He told them that malaria is transmitted by the bite of the female Anopheles mosquito and is caused by the plasmodium parasite which are of five species; P. Falciparum, P. Vivax, P. Ovale, P. malariae and P. Knowles. He also said that the symptoms were headaches, chills, fever, sour taste and body ache amongst others.
He ended by saying that malaria can be prevented by using insecticide treated nets, insecticides, keeping the environment clean free of stagnant water and bushes.
Tolu learnt so much and she could not wait to share what the Doctor had told her with Remi.
