Last week, we talked about : Have You Ever Had An Encounter With Quacks?
It made quite an interesting discuss as people were pouring out there hearts mixed with personal experiences. We appreciate the contributions of the following persons who dropped their meaningful opinions; @Menoski, @Nonny, @Donnest, @Gabeman, @Emmakkayluv, @Debbietiyan, @Yungchief, @Dubem-eu, @Ohakfarm, @Seunnla @antigenx, @annieben and many others.

On to the topic of the week...

In the past, people were more kind to strangers in general. People were much more willing to even donate their vehicle just to convey an injured person to the hospital.

These days, what you rather see are people gathered around say an accident scene. They even snuff out the rest of the oxygen the victim can get, make away with personal belongings and take selfies/videos to post on social media.

When you watch these videos you actually notice that no one is helping the victims. They are literally watching them die.

Eg these Benghali students were literally watching their friend drown while they take a selfie. Thats the garment circled red in the background

The question now is,

Why Do On-Lookers Rather Take Selfies While Someone Is Dying In An Emergency Situation?

What do you think are the major factors contributing to these phenomenon?

An injured person could be anyone. It could be you reading this. It could be your beloved relatives. Would you like them to be treated same way by strangers?

We are expecting your candid opinions on this topic!

the major reason why onlookers take selfies before calling for help i think is because they do not know the gravity of the impending emergency.

secondly, they would want to be the first to post about such cases online to get emotional gratification by the number of likes that stems out of such post.

its so unfortunate that this is now the stock in trade of almost every single youth of the 21st century.
@antigenx

I must comment @air-clinic for this public forum which I believe will go a long way in re-orientating on some wrong practices and perceptions.
Mobile phones seems to have sap away the milk of human kindness in many people that many spectators at emergency situations feels so unconcerned and are only interested in sharing eye sore pictures and videos of victims of such emergencies even when their little help can save a life.
This is uncalled for as no one will reward you for sharing most of such videos and pictures on social media but God will certainly reward you for a any help you rendered to victims of emergencies.

The world as we know it, is now very wicked. In the past, people are contented with what they have. But in recent times people are no longer contented with they have and want short cut to wealth and also people are more intelligent and informed. A place filled with illiterates is where you see people helping themselves. It's because of this very act that has change the world from my view. Now people are scared to help people because of the stories they have heard. Haven't you guys heard of people giving money to people and disappearing? or people helping someone who cannot get somewhere, and allowing the person entering into his/her car and the next thing the person is dead. You see someone injured and help the person, you might have put yourself into a wahala that you could have avoided. Many, I mean many people have died because of helping people that they don't know. Its bad not to help but there is always wisdom in doing things.

To keep it simple, I think its just the natural apathy and lack of awareness of this generation. We are all involved. We can do better.

upvote me bro please

Please stop spamming, pleaseee... Its really annoying .,ul be lucky if you dont get down voted by whales. The least you could have done is comment something meaningful to contribute to this forum and topic that will be worthy an upvote.. Damn.

lol @purpletanzanite. I could feel your pain while reading this

It is rather appalling that humanity has degraded to this level, where people no longer feel the pains of others and would rather take pictures than help victims. One of the reason for this is as a result of the way we have been engrossed in social media where those who share news first make more money or earn thumbs up.
Secondly is because, there are risks of being arrested by some charlatan security agents. You may e end be accused for murder if the victim doesn't survive. So people would rather steer clear.
I however think that these problems can be solved by proper orientation and reorientation of the populace and security agents. It should be a crime for people other than assigned journalist to take pictures in accident scenes, and the security operatives should learn to investigate properly to reduce the probability of arresting innocent good Sa

The world is changing indeed.
I cried like a baby when someone shared a video of such with me last year December. The accident happened along Lagos-Ibadan express road, the onlookers were busy taking pictures and videos, some were even stealing from the dead bodies. Their was a young lady that was still breathing, she was in so much pain but nobody was attending to her.

I think people resolved into this act as a result of the insecurity state of Nigeria, when you try to help and probably the fellow died in your car or in your hand, our security personnel would not see you as trying to help, they would treat you as if you are responsible.
For this act to change, we all have a role to play. We need to be re-orientated .
Thank you for this beautiful topic,i hope it go a long way in changing our thinking.

It's very unwelcomed development in our comtemporary time.
I've some exprience like that of the topic of today, which I will like to share with us;
It happened in Wuse 2, at exclusive store. After his two months of successfull wedding, he called out his beloved wife to meet him at mid way after working hours, that's around 4-4:30, you know the gist, ladies don't play with anything outing and shopping. That's cool anyway because it's only way we can express our love "by giving".
While they were at exclusive store at wuse2 Abuja, still looking round for what to pick, a strayed bullet hit the man at where he's standing, from two policemen who were having a heated misunderstanding.
At that scene the only thing most people are interested is taking pics and selfies and I was like what is going on?, why is nobody doing anything to save this man?
Everyone was posing like a journalist, the bottomline is that, eventually we took him to general hospital but no major medication could be carried out because the doctors said that he has lost alot of bloods and he was placed under blood difussion and diets for his pvc to come up, (some words might be wrong but forgive me, am not a medical personnel). He lost the leg because of delay, people were busy taking pics and selfies while somebody is dying at the pool of his blood right in front of them.
Every time i see him leaping with one leg, I remember a group of unconcerned people, whose early response could have saved his leg and said to myself, whenever I found myself in any accident scene, my approach is " get him to the clinic before getting a pics or selfies"
More awareness have to be created like the one our dear air-clinic is spreading, it will really change the course of things in the world,
WHY WE MUST NOT WELCOME THE COMFORT OF TAKING PICS AND SELFIES OVER THE URGENCE OF TAKING A VICTIM TO A NEAR CLINIC;

  • Because life lost can not be revived
  • Because you can always have the opportunity to take that selfie wit that person.
  • It's more great to save a life.

Lets allow the change to start with us, save a soul, before taking a selfie.

Because everyone is doing it, doesn't make it right, let's try to be different.
Thanks
Air-clinic is the best
I love you, all.

This just reminds me of a student who lost his life cause of loss of blood due to gun shot wound. His neighbour refused to drive him to the hospital in his car to avoid staining his seats but had the guts to snap him in his pain. I can't even begin to think of the numerous people that have lost their lives because people were busy taking pictures... its disheartening!

I commend you @air-clinic for this wonderful article.

This is a menace really trending in our civilized societies today.
Firstly, I think it is caused by the negative notion people have about technology and people's addicted behavior to social media.
Because people have neglected the real essence of social media creation only to use it to gain popularity negatively.
secondly, I also imagine it religiously.
A good religious person will always be engrossed in the mindset of helping the needy.
Many people are just their brothers keeper orally, nobody puts it into practice anymore because the love for humanity is now only limited to self and family.
lastly this act is also influenced by rulership, governance and the way a society is structured.
We think we r in a developed world and therefore no one should die saving another.
Because we believe we only die once and therefore no risk is worth taking provided it is not fetching income.

This really requires urgent attention through educative and informative symposia.
