What is lassa fever?
Lassa fever is a viral hemorrhagic fever caused by lassa virus transmitted by a multimammate rat called mastomys natelensis
My Story
I know of a doctor, but maybe never thought it would happen to him and in the widest of my horrific dreams, never imagine loosing my life in trying to save that of another, that of course it would not only be unjust remuneration, but totally cruel.
He was a medical graduate of University of Nigeria Nsukka class of 2016 who had dreams that was cut short because of lassa fever.
He was an intern in Kogi state teaching hospital, he was on call that night when a mother brought her 7 months old child that presented with high grade fever and bloody diarrhoea.
He attended to the patient and after his contact with that patient, he started having headache which I know for sure, was way beyond the conventional case dissolved by taking mere analgesics. Along with it came fever that was sudden in onset, high grade and continuous but that not withstanding, he kept on with dutiful commitment to his little sick patient whom he has been managing albeit his health continuing on the path of steep nose- diving deterioration, ever since his mum brought him at the hospital.
The 7 months old boy health kept deteriorating until he died 2 days after .
His case had worsened too, as he felt life was leaving him gradually.
It was like play until his diagnostic test results sent to Benin teaching hospital came out and behold that was his death sentence.
It struck my heart, that was his last day on seeing the light of a new day and just like his little patient, he will soon be closing his eyes forever.
If there was a solace to find, let it be in the fact that it was in his humble service to mankind that he lost his own life
