Robot News: They Can Teach Themselves to Walk Now!

in #ai7 years ago (edited)

There's a new robot in town, its called the DyRET and it is suprisingly lifelike as it has the ability to learn from its environment and perfect its means of navigating terrain. The DyRET is a robot designed by a University of Oslo research group. It is a quadruped that has the remarkable ability to teach itself how to walk on different terrains. Something incredibly impressive about the new robot is the fact that it has the ability to learn from its mistakes.

Apparently researchers have been working on the DyRET for several years with the original blueprints being drawn up in 2015. It has gone through several version updates however the latest version, is clearly the most adept at figuring out the leg and gait length necessary to cruise around on ice, rocks, or any other surface. Basically, it is good at learning how to walk like a pro!

With every shaky step DyRET makes, we’re that much closer to having truly all-terrain robots.

I can see all sorts of applications for this type of robotic technology. It would be my guess based on research around robotics that many groups are tackling this problem and the scientists and roboticists at NASA have definitely made major strides to improve this technology as well seeing as it is a very important ability to have when sending to survey robots to Mars and other planets.

Of course, DyRET doesn’t always look like it’s got things figured out. When its designers set it on a new surface, the robot starts shifting everywhere. All four legs, which have joints that bend inwards, expand and contract in two places. DyRET tries out various-sized steps, too, and sometimes, the choices fail and it falls over. But DyRET’s motion sensor picks up on which choices provide the most stability, and the robot remembers the successful ones.

There is a sort of skynet creepiness involved with this in my opinion. How long will it be until our technology becomes smarter than we are? Are we already at that stage. Take a look at the video below, I'm not too worried about the DyRET itself taking over the world but it is a clear message that we aren't in Kansas anymore!

So what did you guys think about the DyRET? Is it an impressive robot? How important to you think this type of skill is in regard to getting robotics to a stage of mass adoption?

Please leave your thoughts below!

Rapidly developing technologies of robotics will have a profound impact on workers and people. Therefore, it is extremely important to pay attention to the safety and well-being of people-workers in the transition to these new technologies.

New robotics applications are fundamentally different from previous formats, in which robots were designed to work in isolation from people. New classes of robots are designed to work together with people and among them. Thanks for illustrative article. I liked the video.

Seen sofia the ai robot. Walking jeeez primal.

Without a doubt, it is a very impressive robot, it is in its infancy, it is learning to walk and it is still vulnerable. I think that when it improves it will be very useful for NASA and other space agencies in the work of reconnaissance and exploration; You will learn to run, climb, dig and other ... It will be wonderful, I believe it. Likewise, it will be a precursor in the development of new technology!

Wow it's walking my God! It's really Is, Wow okay these are really simple body part component, I mean does it have like a brain box or something?

It is walking indeed! There is a computer processing unit doing calculations I believe and an AI software program is running to collect data and make decisions in the background. Freaky sci-fi stuff eh?

really freaky you're right, this is a whole new advancement In robotic intelligence
