Real Africans will never keep shut
Life is very tough, rough and nasty for the average African. No wonder he developed a tough and rugged attitude to the arduous life ahead. Africa indeed is the most blessed continent in the world in terms of natural resources and good climate. However, she has also been bedevilled with poor leadership which has impoverished the masses. While many Africans has developed the 'Siddon look approach' (sit down and look approach) several others have dedicated their life to speak against injustice in the society.
Using Nigeria as a case study, back in the year 2017, the economic situation in Nigeria was pathetic. To add salt to injury, the President who was elected to fix the country has been enjoying medical vacation in London for over 2 months. Millions of Nigerians refused to be silent over the issue.
Popular musician Tuface Idibia paints the picture clearly.
“The people have hoped for a better Nigeria since 1999 but things are not getting any better for the majority. We are still where we are – poor and desperate. I will no longer be quiet.”
Tuface comment led to the #IStandWithNigeria and the #resumeorresign protests spearheaded by Charly Boy and a host of prominent Nigerians.
The protest generated attention not only withing the country but also in London where President Muhammadu Buhari was receiving treatment. Surprisingly, the President was flown back to the country two days after the London protest. This shows that Nigerians not only refused to be silent, their voices was also heard.
Historically, Africans are not quiet in the face of oppression, in America Pan Africanist such as Martin Luther spoke against racism. In South Africa, Nelson Mandela and others fought Apartheid to a standstill.
In Nigeria, educated elites the likes of chief Obafemi Awolowo, Herbert Macaulay waged an intellectual war against colonialism and prevailed. Indeed, real Africans can never and will never keep shut.
