EXT.EFUTAYO'S COMPOUND - NIGHT
The gate man opens the gate to let Foma's car in. She parks the car and goes over to the other side to help Mark on his wheelchair.
Mark seems upset, he brushes her off and calls out to the gate man to come help him.
Foma walks angrily into the house. Mark wheels himself vigorously into the house almost immediately and gives Foma a stern look.
MARK EFUTAYO
Why were you late to pick me up for the event ?
foma
Mark, please don't start. I had a court case and i came as quickly as i could. it's not like we were late to the event per say. We arrived right on time
MARK EFUTAYO
(Yelling)
Shut up. you are nothing but a lying whore.
Tears roll down Foma's eyes.
FOMA
Mark?
Mark wheels himself closer to Foma
MARK EFUTAYO
Yes, you heard me. Loud and clear
FOMA
Mark, why are you calling me such a name? All I have done is to be there for you. I have given all of me to you. What more do you want ?
MARK EFUTAYO
Maybe you can come and sit on this chair for a change. It's your fault I am in this condition. This predicament came to me all because I wanted to make you happy. To satisfy your insatiable demands and nagging. But what do I get? You go about frolicking with men in the pretense of work. You are nothing but cheap and loose
Foma gives out a loud cry and falls to the ground and weeps bitterly.
FOMA
(In tears)
Mark stop this. You know that is not true. I have loved you from day one and I have always been there for you. How long will you keep blaming me for what happened to you?
Mark angrily drags Foma by the hair. She cries out.
MARK EFUTAYO
That would be when I see you on a wheelchair or preferably dead
Mark lets her go and wheels himself out of the room. Foma cries bitterly.

Hello Foma, how are you doing this glorious morning?
FOMA
I am fine thank you Sir. How do you do ?
BARRISTER YEMI
Never been better. Especially now that you have added another victory to our list of achievements.
The both laugh and shake hands.
BARRISTER YEMI
We are amazed at your results. Your level of expertise in the field of domestic violence and bringing justice and settlements to these women is breathtaking. The board has agreed to reward you.
FOMA
Wow. Thank you for the compliments Sir. I am so speechless. I must say that I owe my conquests to the amount of support I receive from this Firm.
BARRISTER YEMI
Don't be so modest Foma. You and I know you are a great addition to Tulips. I must commend this your personal interest in domestic violence, it is your driving force. You have done wonders.
FOMA
Thank you so much Sir. I am very grateful.
BARRISTER YEMI
By the way, how is your husband mark?
FOMA

INT.foma's office - day
Foma is sitting on her desk and fondling with documents.
Her Secretary Lisa walks in and drops some files on her table drawing Foma's attention.
FOMA
Lisa take it easy with the files. You don't have to break the table with them.
Lisa
Sorry Ma, they are just too many. We are getting so many cases lately. It seems everyone wants to get out of a bad marriage now that they know you have the magic stick.
FOMA
Well, I need a break. I decided the one i recently won was going to be my last for a while. Some other lawyers here can take on them. I need to take care of personal stuff.
LISA
That is a great idea Ma. You have been so stressed lately. You have really done great with all those cases you handled. You deserve some rest.
FOMA
Sounds right when you put it that way. So take the files back to your office and see to it that another lawyer takes a look at them.
Lisa picks up the files and makes her way out of the office.
Almost immediately, Lisa walks back into the office and was about announcing something to Foma when Chuka Foma's colleague pushes his way through.
chuka
Like my presence needs to be announced?
Foma signals at Lisa to leave. Chuka walks in a cocky manner to Foma's desk and places his hand on her table. He gives Foma a smirk.
chuka
Hello beautiful.
FOMA
Barrister Chuka, what do you want?
CHUKA
You have been avoiding me. We work in the same office, how long were you thinking you could keep this up?
Foma smiles and shakes her head disapprovingly.
FOMA
I seriously have no idea what you mean.
Chuka unbuttons his suit jacket and paces around the room like he was modeling. Foma's gaze follows him everywhere he went.
CHUKA
You haven't given me an answer to the lunch date I requested.
FOMA
I don't think I want to go for lunch with you. Whenever I get hungry, I know where to go to get food.
CHUKA
Why are you being so difficult. Give a man a break here. Asking women out is not my thing. It is always the other way round. You should feel lucky.
FOMA
(Smiling)
I will have you know I am a married woman and you entertain you asking me out.
CHUKA
Oh please. Like that has ever stopped me before? I like it better when women play hard to get. Makes me want to up my game. I will get that lunch date. One way or another.
Chuka blows Foma a kiss and exits the office. Foma slouches back to her chair laughing to herself.

Foma is sitting up on the bed toying with the note she retrieved from under her car whippers.
Mark wheels himself into the room and gives her an awkward look.
MARK EFUTAYO
I thought you were asleep.
FOMA
Not yet, was waiting for you. It is late, come to bed. something awkward happened today at work.
MARK EFUTAYO
I am not sleepy. I will come back when you are asleep. I am not interested in the small talk.
Mark wheels around to leave the room. Foma rushes over and stops his wheel chair from rolling out with her hand.
FOMA
Stop this Mark. How long will you avoid me? I am sorry for what happened the other day.
Mark has a fixated look at the point where Foma's hand held his wheelchair
MARK EFUTAYO
Now you think you control my movement? The same way you have changed and controlled my life all for your dirty ambition?
Mark gives Foma a strong push which leaves her tumbling to the floor.
He wheels his wheelchair and climbs Foma's feet.
Foma cries out and quickly withdraws her leg to avoid further assault.
MARK EFUTAYO
Don't you ever think you can control me. It's bad enough you put me in this wheel chair. I am a vegetable for life and you still run around doing the things you like. I will kill you before I let you control me.
Mark wheels himself out of the room. Foma cries bitterly.

A younger Foma is walking along the road with a sad expression on her face.
She is wearing a law student uniform and tugging on her shirt.
A healthy Mark drives by. He was wearing a military army uniform.
Mark has lost his way and needs direction. He spots Foma and goes over to her for directions.
MARK EFUTAYO
Hello, sorry to disturb you but I am kind of lost.
FOMA
(Frowning)
How can I help?
MARK EFUTAYO
I am looking for the local Government headquarters. I was told it is around here somewhere.
FOMA
You are almost there. It's located at the next major junction. Hard to miss.
MARK EFUTAYO
Wow. Thank you so much. I have been driving around aimlessly.
Foma turns around to walk away and Mark hold her back by the arm.
MARK EFUTAYO
Hold on. I couldn't help but notice you have been crying. What is wrong?
Foma tries to wipe her face as if to erase traces that she had been crying.
FOMA
No No, I am fine. I am not crying. I have to go now. Nice meeting you.
MARK EFUTAYO
I want to know what is wrong with you. It won't be nice to leave you in this condition.
Hearing this, Foma breaks down and cries.
Mark gives her an embrace to console her.
MARK EFUTAYO
You know what? The local Government can wait. Let us go somewhere and talk about this.
Foma gives Mark an agreeing node and he guides her to the car.

A waiter brings a tray of food and places it on the table. Foma still looks very sad.
MARK EFUTAYO
Cheer up Foma. We are here now. Tell me all about it.
FOMA
Its my law final year exams. I don't think I will be allowed to write it on Monday if I dot pay my final year school fees. Today is Friday and I don't even have any hope of getting the money.
MARK EFUTAYO
I don't understand. Final year fees? Who has been paying the other fees? What about your parents?
Foma looks down and tears roll down her cheeks.
FOMA
My parents are late. A good man from my community was impressed with my secondary school academic performance. He put me on scholarship and has been paying my fees since first year. He died last year and his family refused to continue with the payment. Now I may not be allowed to write my last exam.
MARK EFUTAYO
That is terrible. Your story is a very sad one. I am so sorry. How much is this your fee?
FOMA
It is 150, 000 in all. I don't even know where to get it from.
Mark stares into space for a while and then returns his gaze to Foma.
MARK EFUTAYO
(Smiling)
Foma eat your food. Nothing will stop you from writing your exam on Monday.
FOMA
(Surprised)
How do you mean?
MARK EFUTAYO
I said eat your food. After lunch, you will see what I mean. At least we have 3 hours to bank close.
Foma stares at him lost.
MARK EFUTAYO
Foma I said eat.
Foma struggles with her fork and finally picks it up to eat. Mark kept smiling all through.

ext. foma's office - day
Foma is on the phone with her Boss.
Lisa walks in holding a piece of paper and gestures to Foma. She holds up a finger asking her to hold on.
When Foma was done with the phone call, she turns to Lisa.
FOMA
Lisa, what is it?
Lisa moves closer and hands her the piece of paper she was holding.
LISA
I found this on my desk Ma. I don't know what it means but I think someone is trying to reach out to you off the books.
Foma is surprised.
She stretches out her hand to collect the paper. She unfolds it to read the content:
" You have to help me. He wants to kill me. If he knows I want your help, he will skin me alive. Please help me. St Mary's catholic church. 1pm, Friday."
Foma looks up at Lisa as if seeking answers for what she just read.
FOMA
Lisa, how did you say you got this?
LISA
Found it on my desk this morning. Whoever left it there knew it was going to get to you.
Foma slouches on her chair and examines the piece of paper further.
FOMA
I got a note like this the other day. It was under my whipper. The same handwriting. Who could this be? Why can't the person just walk in and book an appointment?
LISA
It beats my imagination Ma. I will advice we ignore it and possibly tighten security or something.
Foma rubs her chin still studying the piece of paper.
She stands to her feet and paces around the office.
FOMA
I will meet with her. That is what she really wants. Whoever this person is, she is scared to death and doesn't want the person assaulting her to find out she is seeking help. They is an address in the note. St Mary's Catholic church by 1pm on Friday.
Lisa gives Foma a worried look and draws closer to her.
LISA
I don't think that is such a good idea Ma. For all we know, this could be a trap or some kind of set up.
FOMA
I don't think so Lisa. Whatever this is, i hope to find out soon. Cancel any engagement I may have from 12:30 on that day. I need to meet this mystery woman.
Foma walks back to her sit still studying the piece of paper.

int. supermarket - day
Foma is walking around the aisle and throwing items into her shopping trolley.
Someone taps her by the shoulder and she turns around to see Mrs Adebayo, an elder from Church.
Mrs Adebayo
Oh I knew it was you. How are you my dear?
FOMA
I am fine Mrs Adebayo. Good to see you.
MRS ADEBAYO
The pleasure is actually mine. How is your husband Mark?
FOMA
Mark is great.
MRS ADEBAYO
That is good. My regards.
FOMA
Sure Mrs Adebayo
Mrs Adebayo waves her good bye and turns to leave.
Suddenly she turns and slowly walks back to Foma. Foma is surprised.
MRS ADEBAYO
Foma dear, I don't mean to pry. You and Mark have been married for a while now and yet no children. Is it in anyway related to his condition?
Foma gives her an awkward look and shakes her head disapprovingly.
FOMA
If you must know. Mark is only paralyzed and not impotent. Although the Doctor said such stress might slow things down. But it is only a matter of time. We will be fine soon.
MRS ADEBAYO
I understand dear but time is of the essence. You are not getting any younger. Have you considered adoption? It is a good way to prepare yourself for any eventuality.
Foma gives out a short laugh and walks a tad away from Mrs Adebayo who follows her.
FOMA
Like I said, we will be fine. Thank you for looking out for us.
MRS ADEBAYO
Just think about it. Time is of the essence.
FOMA
Thank you.
Mrs Adebayo turns and leaves.
Foma gives her a long look before returning to her shopping.

INT.efutayo's living room - night
Foma is sitting on a couch and browsing through her laptop.
At a point, she stares into space. She recollects the encounter she had with Mrs Adeboye. Her words replay in her head:
"Have you considered adoption...time is of the essence."
Foma returns to her laptop and start searching adoption websites and scrolling through photos.
Mark startles her when he wheels into the room and goes for the remote control to change the channel.
FOMA
Mark..
MARK EFUTAYO
Yeah
FOMA
What do you think about adoption?
Mark gives her a stern look. He shakes his head in disapproval.
MARK EFUTAYO
And where is that coming from?
FOMA
I met with Mrs Adeboye from Church today while I was shopping. She kind of advice we give it a try. I didn't see reasons with her earlier but giving it a better thought. It might not be such a bad idea.
MARK EFUTAYO
Are you saying you went out telling whoever cares to listen our business?
FOMA
No No. That is not what I am saying?
MARK EFUTAYO
Then what are you saying?
FOMA
Mark, I am saying we have been married for four years and no kids yet. Don't you think it is about time we consider adopting?
Mark ignores her and wheels himself to the bar.
He reaches for a bottle of brandy and a glass and pours himself some.
Foma is uneasy.
She goes closer to Mark and sits on a couch beside him.
FOMA
Mark, didn't you hear all I said?
MARK EFUTAYO
You want to adopt a child? To show the world you are such a good mother or what?
FOMA
We deserve to have a shot at parenting. Adopting can be our only shot at it since...
MARK EFUTAYO
(Cutting in)
Since what? No say it. Since what? Since I am not man enough or what?
FOMA
No Mark. Don't talk that way.
MARK EFUTAYO
No tell me. Since what? Since I am not able to father a child? How else do you want to put it? You live your life day after day letting me know I am half the man you expect me to be. When it was you who made me like this.
Tears roll down Foma's face.
FOMA
No Mark. I didn't mean it that way. All I am saying is that we should give parenting a try.
Mark immediately smashes the short glass he was holding to the ground.
The noise shocks Foma and she curls up on the couch.
MARK EFUTAYO
Let this be the last time I will hear of such stupidity.
Mark wheels himself out of the room.

Boyo is winning, he makes more moves and Mark tries hard to intercept.
MARK EFUTAYO
This man, you are still very good at this game. I thought by now your hands will be slow.
BOYO
(Laughing)
Haven't you heard the saying, an old woman never gets tired of a dance she knows how to do well.
MARK EFUTAYO
You can say that again. My friend, it has really been a long time. The military has done you good.
BOYO
Oh please. With all the stress involved? You obviously know it is not all rosey. You have been there.
They both laugh and move around more games on the chess board.
Boyo spots Foma's picture on a side stool and goes over to admire it.
BOYO
Such a lovely photo. How is she doing? Foma your dream come true.
MARK EFUTAYO
(Laughing)
Foma is great, she is at work. My dream come true indeed. Funny when you put it that way.
BOYO
Definitely, isn't that what it is? A dream come true. Mark i have never seen you in love with anyone the way you love Foma. I could still remember the excitement the day you broke the news to me about your plans.
Mark smiles sheepishly and gives Boyo a long stare.

MARK EFUTAYO
Why wouldn't I be? I think she is the one. Finally I can get married and settle down before military work takes me to a place i won't be able to do much.
BOYO
This is interesting. The Mark I know doesn't joke with things like this. So who is the lucky one ?
MARK EFUTAYO
Her name is Foma. She is a law graduate about going to law school. She is just a dream come true.
BOYO
Wow. How long have you been seeing this Foma girl?
MARK EFUTAYO
A couple of months and i think it is time. I love her so much and can't imagine a world without her.I need to marry her before she gets serious with law school.

I just can't wait. Best man right ?
MARK EFUTAYO
Most definitely, you have to be the best man.

Mark's phone rings and he reaches for it.
MARK EFUTAYO
Hello..OK. Today? Alright...I will be there shortly.
Mark ends the phone call and smiles at Boyo.
He wheels himself to a table where he picks up his car keys and throws them at Boyo.
Boyo catches them mid air.
MARK EFUTAYO
My doctor just called. Apparently he is free today and would like me to come in for a check up. The hospital is on the same avenue with Foma's office. We can get her for lunch.

He said he would kill me if I ever try to leave him.
Foma is startled.
She spins around nervously to come face to face with Ada.
They share a long look and then Ada inches closer.
Ada
I am sorry to disturb you like this. But he can not know i am seeing you. He will kill me.
FOMA
Calm down. Please if you can explain the situation to me. Maybe I can find a way to help.
ADA
I know you can help. You are very popular with cases like mine, I have been following your court cases for a while. How you help abused women get out of bad marriages. How you prosecute their abusers. How you help them get settlements to take care of their children. I want that. I want to be free before he kills me. I want him behind bars.
FOMA
I understand what you want. You have to tell me your story. What is your husband doing to you that makes you want to leave the marriage so bad.
Ada moves to a chair and sits down.
Foma sits close to her and holds her by the hand.
Ada
I have been married for 3 years. We have two children, a boy and a girl. He has not always been like this. At first he was so sweet, so caring and kind. All of a sudden the beating started, the rape and threats. I am so scared. I worry for my life and that of my kids.
Foma is almost in tears.
Ada's story cast memories of her experiences with Mark. The way they started before all the chaos.
She tightens her hold on Ada's hand.
FOMA
He will do nothing to you. You will get the help you need and he will pay for ever laying a finger on you.
Ada gives Foma a long look with tears in her eyes.
Ada
What of my kids, how do I take care of them. He has never let me work for a day. I survive from whatever he gives us.
FOMA
You don't need to worry about that. He is your husband and whenever he goes behind bars for his actions, You will get your settlement. You can live your life and take care of your kids.
ADA
I am so scared but I trust you. I know you will help me.
FOMA
Just stop worrying. You will be fine. I will be needing more information about him, so I can open a case file for you at work. You don't have to come to the office. We can always meet in restaurants and places he won't find you. That beast will be put behind bars soon enough.

Lisa, why are you being so worried? Like I told you, everything is fine. I met with her and I have decided to take up her case. I will do everything I can to put her beast of a husband behind bars and help her find closure. So stop worrying about me.
LISA
Actually Ma, I wasn't calling because of that. Your husband left some minutes ago. He said he came for a medical checkup around the area and decided to come pick you for lunch. He came with a fried of his.
FOMA
(surprised)
Are you serious?
LISA
Nothing to worry about Ma. I did not disclose anything to him because I know you want to keep the meeting a secrete. So I told him you went for lunch with a colleague.
Foma's mouth drops open and tears pool in her eyes.
foma
Oh no Lisa, you shouldn't have told him that.
Lisa
(Surprised)
But Ma...
foma
(Cuts in)
You just didn't have to tell him that. Never mind. get back to work.

FOMA
(Crying)
Oh my God Mark. Why? Why on earth will you burn my cloths. What did I ever do to you?
A voice startles Foma from behind.
She spins around to see Mark wheeling towards her.
MARK EFUTAYO
Prostitutes need to burn in hell. You are lucky it's your clothing ablaze and not you.
FOMA
Mark, I have had enough of this harassment. I can not stand this your attitude anymore. What did I ever do to you?
MARK EFUTAYO
You did everything to me. You changed the course of my life. I had a career. The whole world was in front of me. You took all that away when you put me on this chair. Now you think you can leave me and chase after men. You pretend to be working when all you do is mess around with your colleagues. That is why you are so comfortable being the only female lawyer in that firm. They take turns with you.
FOMA
Mark just shut up. You know all that isn't true. You just keep making stuff up to degrade me in every grotesque way there is and I have had enough of that. This is tearing me apart. I have given you all of me but day after day you destroy me. You are so mean and ungrateful. I wonder what I am still doing in this house.
Foma rushes past Mark and makes her way angrily into the house.
Mark wheels himself and follows her behind cursing.
MARK EFUTAYO
Where the hell do you think you are going?
FOMA
I am leaving you Mark. I have had enough of this.
MARK EFUTAYO
Leaving? Where do you know you are going? I guess back to them right? You can't get enough of them right? I promise you, I will kill you myself.
Foma ignores him and heads up the stairs.
She reaches the bedroom and hurriedly packs the few personal items she could find.
She could hear Mark cursing from downstairs.
She packs up and heads back downstairs where she meets Mark.
As she was about walking past him, Mark holds her back by the hand.
MARK EFUTAYO
Foma, please don't go.
Foma struggles to break free but his grip is strong.
FOMA
(Crying)
Let me go. Let me go. I am tired of this life. I have given you all the love I can muster and it isn't enough for you.
MARK EFUTAYO
I am just so sad Baby. I am on a wheelchair. I am so frustrated. Don't leave me baby. You know I need you. What will people say. Think about that baby.I will work on myself. I will go for counseling. Anything to make you stay please.
Foma falls to the ground and cries.
Mark places her head on his lap and pets her.
MARK EFUTAYO
I am so sorry baby. I love you so much.
FOMA
Why do you treat me this way?
MARK EFUTAYO
It won't happen again my love. I don't know why I am always so angry. I will get help, I promise.
FOMA
I love you so much Mark. I am sorry things are the way they are. I will always be here for you. I promise.

ADA
I needed a good excuse to leave the house. You know we don;t want to raise suspicion.
ABDUL
Did you bring the money?
ADA
Oh come on Baby. At least can I get a welcome hug.
Abdul reluctantly gives her a hug.
He walks backwards and extends his hand for the money.
Ada fumbles around in her bag and hands a wrap of cash over to him.
ADA
That is the much I was able to get. You just have to manage it.
ABDUL
How long do I have to endure this?
Ada goes over and holds Abdul by the shoulder.
ADA
Come on Baby. It is just a matter of time.
Abdul brushes her off and stands to his feet.
ABDUL
That is all I hear. How long do I have to wait. Your husband is so rich. By now we should be enjoying the benefits.
ADA
Babe you know I am working on it. I met with the lawyer and she bought my story. She will help me put him behind bars and all his assets will belong to me. Then my baby and I will be so happy.
ABDUL
It is taking too long Baby.
ADA
Don't worry. It will happen sooner than you think. I know this lawyer, she is so good.
ABDUL
I hope so. I am tired of waiting. I want you all to myself. I want to start enjoying all the good stuff you promised.
Ada rubs Abdul's face and gives him a long kiss.
ADA
I assure you, he will be behind bars soon. Now you know what you must do. I will be meeting the lawyer later today and I need to look as convincing as possible.
ABDUL
I don't really like doing this Babe.
ADA
You just have to do it. So get on with it already.
Abdul shrugs and then without warning he hit Ada across the face.
She let out a loud cry and returns her gaze back to Abdul.
ADA
Again. Harder this time.
ABDUL
Are you sure? Come on, this is good enough.
ADA

Oh my God. What happened to your face?
ADA
(Crying)
He did it again. Last night he beat me blue black.
FOMA
This is serious. This has to stop. I need to speed up things and get this jerk behind bars.
ADA
I am so tired of all this. I really want my life back.
Foma grabs her hand.
FOMA
Ada, I assure you. Everything will be over soon. First of all let me take a picture of you as evidence. I will need to include it in your file.
Foma takes a picture of Ada with her phone.
FOMA
Once the evidence against him piles. He will be arrested and charged to court and I can assure you, he won't be coming out of that.
ADA
Thank you so much Foma. Thank you.
Foma gives her a hug and tries to touch her sore face.

INT.FOMA'S OFFICE - DAY
Foma and Lisa are flipping through Ada's files and writing stuff down.
FOMA
As soon as we gather more evidence, we will move in to arrest him. He needs to be convicted for his crimes against Ada.
lisa
Ma, don't you think we should reach out to her husband and hear his side of the story in all this?
FOMA
That won't be necessary. A man that brutal won't stand to reason. Let's let the authorities arrest and interrogate him.
Lisa
But Ma, you said you wanted to take a break. Why is this particular case of so much interest to you?
Foma bites the end of her pen.
He gives Lisa a long look. Flashes of his bad encounters with Mark replay in her head. She closes her eyes to fight the tears back and returns her focus to Lisa.
FOMA
It is just very important to me to put her brute of a husband behind bars. Whenever a man feels threatened, their defense becomes an attack. They humble their wives with their fists and harsh words and move along acting like they own the world. That needs to stop.
The door opens and Chuka walks into the office holding a bouquet of flowers.
Foma and Lisa gives him an awkward look. He ignores them and gallantly makes his way towards them.
chuka
Hello beautiful. Since Mohamed won't go to the mountain. The mountain has found it's way to Mohamed.
FOMA
Chuka, what is it again. We are a little bit busy.
chuka
I brought you something. Thought about you all night and felt i get you something nice this morning.
Chuka drops the bouquet of Roses on Foma's table.
Foma picks it up and smells it.
She hands it over to Lisa and returns her gaze to Chuka.
FOMA
Chuka you need to stop this. I might have to get a restraining order. I don't know what you hope to achieve in all this.
chuka
All I want is one lunch. Just one. I don't know why you are playing hard to get. I don't know where you will realize that I am the right man for you.
FOMA
Well, since I haven't realized that yet. Can we stop all this drama. Thank you for the flowers anyway.
Chuka gives her a smirk. He backs out of the office. He winks at Lisa who had been standing there stupefied before he finally exits.

INT. RESTAURANT - Night
Foma push Mark into the restaurant.
They find a table to sit and a waiter approaches them to take their order.
Minutes later. he returns with a bottle of wine.
FOMA
Mark, I still don't know why you insisted we eat out tonight. I could have made you a wonderful meal at home.
MARK EFUTAYO
I just want us to do something different. Nothing feels better than having a dinner date with the one you love.
FOMA
Oh Mark, that is just so sweet.
The waiter interrupts their moment by placing plates of food in front of each of them.
A man spots Foma from another table and recognizes her. He walks excitedly towards her to make himself know.
He reaches their table and Mark and Foma gives him an awkward look.
man
It is indeed a pleasure to see you again Barrister. I can't thank you enough for what you did for my sister. Thanks to you, she is now living a free and happy life in the US with her children.
Foma didn't seem to recognize the man. She put up a fake smile while searching her memory to recall.
Mark is looking down on his food and trying to hide his building up rage.
The man is trying harder to make sure Foma recognizes him.
MAN
Oh forgive me. From the look on your face I believe you don't recognize me. You helped my sister in her messy divorce case 6 months ago. The one that involved the federal Minister's son.
FOMA
Oh, that's right. I remember now. It's good to know she is finally doing OK. This is my husband Mark.
The man extends a hand to Mark. Mark ignores him and focuses on his food. Foma noticing the tension tries to ease away.
FOMA
Well thank you Sir for coming over here. We really need to get on with our dinner.
man
That is OK. If it's no trouble, I will like to pay for your dinner as a sign of gratitude.
FOMA
No No. That won't be necessary. We got this.
man
Its really no trouble. I insist.
Mark looks up sternly at the man with a growing rage i his eyes.
MARK EFUTAYO
Are you deaf Mr? The lady said no. Get away from here.
FOMA
Mark, he was just trying to....
MARK EFUTAYO
(Cutting in)
Shut up
Foma covers her mouth with her hand. The Man feeling so insulted backs away and goes back to his table. Mark turns to Foma and gives her a long ad hard look.
MARK EFUTAYO
And this is how you ruined our perfect dinner.
Mark pulls his wallet out of his breast pocket and drops some money o the table.
He wheels himself out of the restaurant.
Foma is devastated, She looks down on their untouched food. Gathers her things and follows Mark behind.

Mark is watching TV while Foma is polishing her nails by his side. The house phone rings. Foma tries to make a move for it but Mark signals at her to let him get it.
Mark wheels himself to where the phone was located and picks up the receiver.
MARK EFUTAYO
Hello
VOICE
Hi, good evening. This is Anabel from Global church international. Can I speak to either Mr or Mrs Efutayo?
MARK EFUTAYO
This is Mr Efutayo.
VOICE
OK Sir. We will be having a couples summit after church on Sunday and we were wondering if you and your wife can be in attendance. We will appreciate it if you can also say a word or two to the other couples that will be in attendance.Sir, I will understand if it will not be possible for you people to come in, seeing the invitation was on such short notice.
Mark turns to look at Foma who is still busy polishing her nails.
He returns to the receiver.
MARK EFUTAYO
I will discuss it with my wife. We will try to be there on Sunday. Anything for the church.
VOICE
Thank you so much Sir.
MARK EFUTAYO
Its my pleasure.
Mark ends the call and wheels himself over to where Foma was.

int. global church international - day
Its the couples summit.
Mark and Foma are sitting on the high table alongside other speakers. The audience are directing questions at them one after the other.
audience member
My question goes to Mr and Mrs Efutayo. It is not hard to spot the love between you too. I just want to know your driving force. How do you people keep it together?
MARK EFUTAYO
You said it. Love. Love is all that matters. When love is present, everything else is effortless. That is our driving force. The love we have for one another is unbeatable.
The audience erupt in applauds. Another member of the audience raises her hand to ask a question.
She is granted permission by the moderator.
AUDIENCE MEMBER
Do you people ever have disagreements or differences as a couple and how do you handle it?
Mark turns to Foma and smiles at her.
Foma projects her mouth to speak into the microphone but it was intercepted by Mark.
MARK EFUTAYO
As a couple, we may argue or disagree. But amidst all that commotion, the love we have for one another is stronger than anything. At the end, we come out from all the chaos as stronger lovers.
The audience erupt in another round of applauds.
Several hands go up in the air to be permitted to ask their questions. The moderator notifies everyone that the Efutayo's can only take one last question. She pointed at a lady who stands to ask her question.
AUDIENCE MEMBER
My question goes to Barrister Foma Efutayo. A lot of women are in abusive marriages. As a woman, what is your advice to women who endure these kind of things.
Foma trembles and quickly does her best to regain her composure. She smiles to the lady who threw the question and projects her mouth to the mic.
FOMA
Any man who lifts his hands, clenches his fist and hits a woman is a total Brut and is not worth being with that woman. The woman should learn quick enough to find her way out of that relationship before its too late. Some men feel so intimidated by their women. That is why they feel the best thing to do is to humble them with their blows and abuses. That man is not man enough and doesn't deserve being with any woman. She should pack up and leave.
The audience give Foma a standing ovation. Foma tries hard to fight back the tears pooling in her eyes. Memories of Marks words replay in her head.
Mark is upset but he manages to fake a smile.

Mark is uncomfortable, his hands twitching and loosing his tie.
He turns to Foma and gives her a long look. Foma's gaze is fixed outside the window.
MARK EFUTAYO
What was that all about?
Foma turns to look at him and then returns her gaze to the window.
FOMA
What was what about?
MARK EFUTAYO
(Angry)
The drama you pulled out back there.
FOMA
Mark, I really don't know where you are getting at?
MARK EFUTAYO
What were you trying to tell those people back there? What were you trying to say?
FOMA
(Raised voice)
Mark, I don;t know what you are saying and frankly I am not in the mood for .......
Without warning, Mark hits Foma across the face shutting her up.
The driver is perplexed. He quickly brings the car to a stop.

Foma plants a long kiss on his lips and caresses his cheeks.

What have I done to deserve such a life? Is it wrong to be in love? Is it wrong to keep a promise? How long do I have to be treated this way? God I am tired. I am so tired. I have given Mark my all. Everything I have. All I ever dream of is his happiness. To help him through his sadness but nothing seem to help. I am so tired. God I am so tired.
Foma bursts into a loud cry and curls herself up on the garden chair.

Lisa is at the back sit sorting out documents and handing them to Foma who reads out the content and meaning to Ada.
FOMA
From the evidence we were able to gather. We will be charging your husband with wife battery and punitive damages. Litigation is expensive, so he will be forced to pay the fees.
ADA
That is a wonderful news.
FOMA
Ada, It is time out of hiding. Once this law suit is served, everything will become public knowledge.
Ada smiled at Foma and held her hand. She nodded in approval.
ADA
Yes, I am very aware of what the outcome will be. At this point all I want is just to be free.
FOMA
Once every thing is ready. We will serve your husband a summon. You don't have to worry, he can't hurt you anymore. You will get a restraining order and as soon as this case is done, you will get the settlement you deserve.
ADA
Thank you so much.

BARRISTER YEMI

FOMA

BARRISTER YEMI
That is good. But before that, I told you we were planning to reward you for your victories. So the board has decided to host a victory dinner in your honor. It will be saturday night, So be sure to bring your husband.
Foma gasps for breadth and holds a hand on her chest.
FOMA
Wow Sir, I feel so honored. Thank you so much. I will definitely bring Mark.
BARRISTER YEMI
Great, see you Saturday night then.
FOMA
OK Sir.
Barrister Yemi steps out of the office and Foma jumps in jubilation and rushes to her phone to make a call.

MARK EFUTAYO
Babe, stop avoiding me. This silent treatment is killing me. I am sorry about what happened last night.
Foma gives him a stern look and walks over to the other side of the table.
MARK EFUTAYO
Baby, I said I am sorry. I don't know what came over me. I just got so upset and couldn't help myself. I swear it will....
FOMA
(Cutting in)
Never happen again? Isn't that such a cliche?
MARK EFUTAYO
I am sorry Babe. This time i am certain it will never happen again.
Foma sits on a chair and covers her face with her palms. Mark wheels close to her and holds her by the shoulder.
MARK EFUTAYO
My love, I promise you I will change. I promise you everything will get back to normal. I love you so much.
FOMA
I am tired of this repetition. I don't know what to believe anymore.

BARRISTER YEMI

Barrister Yemi extends a hand to Mark. Mark shakes him excitedly all smiles.
MARK EFUTAYO

BARRISTER YEMI
Oh come on. She deserves more. She has done exceedingly well in her job.
Mark gives Foma a happy look.
MARK EFUTAYO
Yes she is so incredible. More reason i love her so much.
They all laugh. Barrister Yemi spots Chuka at a corner and calls out to him to come over. Chuka comes over to where they were and was happy to see Foma.
BARRISTER YEMI
This is Chuka one of Foma's closest colleagues. I hope he learns one or two things from her.
Everyone laughs. Chuka still has a fixated look on Foma. Mark is uncomfortable and when Foma notices, she tries to clear the air.
FOMA
Chuka, this is my Husband Mark. Mark my work colleague Barrister Chuka.
Mark and Chuka shake hands. Chuka is so shocked to see that Mark was on a wheelchair. He returns his gaze to Foma and gives her and awkward smile. Foma excuses herself and pushes Mark away from the circle to join the party.

chuka
What a lovely evening. I have never had so much fun since i resumed work at Tulips. All thanks to your wife.
MARK EFUTAYO
Thank you.
CHUKA
She is such an incredible woman, isn't she?
Mark gives Chuka a stern look.
MARK EFUTAYO
Yes she is, that is why she is my wife.
Chuka gives out a loud sound like he was choking on his drink. He turns to look at Mark and continues making the sound in order to mock him.
chuka
You see that is the part I find very funny. Why would a woman so incredible and sophisticated as Foma be your wife?
Mark is furious. His hands are shaking. He has a fixated look on Chuka like he was going to tear him to shreds.
Chuka ignores him. He walks round Mark.
chuka
A jewel such as Foma deserves better. I haven't met a woman more incredible. More beautiful. What on earth is she doing with you?
Mark is all sweat with rage. His whole body is shaking now. he attempts to stand as if to pounce on Chuka but couldn't.
Chuka gives a loud laugh mocking his efforts.
chuka
Oh how sad. I can imagine how bad you want to stand up right now. Do you feel less of a man now? You need to allow Foma to be fulfilled. Allow her be with a man like me. Someone that will make her feel like the woman she is. not some veggie on a wheelchair.
Chuka pours the content of his glass cup away and walks back into the event hall. Mark is in rage. He gasps for breadth and picks up his phone to make a call.
MARK EFUTAYO
Where are you. You need to get me out of here now. Forget about my wife. She will return home on her own.

FOMA
Chuka, not now. I am not in the mood. Have you seen my Husband?
CHUKA
Mark? I saw him leave. I guess he needed to get to somewhere urgently.
FOMA
(Shocked)
What? That is impossible. Why would Mark leave me here and go. He has to be around here somewhere. I can't even reach him. My purse and phone are in the car. How do I get home now?
CHUKA
Come on beautiful, I am not all bad. If your husband left you here. Then its probably for the best. Now we got each other.
Foma gives Chuka a stern look. She walks away from him and moves around searching for Mark. Chuka follows her.
chuka
Foma you need to stop stressing yourself. Your husband is gone. I saw him leave myself.
FOMA
This is so odd. Why will Mark leave me here. Oh my God. I really need to get home.
chuka
At least I can give you a ride home. Your purse is in the car remember?
Foma is helpless. She walks around aimlessly and returns back to where Chuka was standing.

chuka

FOMA
Of course not Chuka. Thanks for the ride.
Foma attempts to leave and Chuka blocks her way.
Mark is watching them from the upstairs window. His eyes red with rage.

His face is dripping with sweat.
Foma climbs the stairs towards him.
FOMA
Mark, what happened? Why on earth would you leave me at that party. Knowing fully well my purse and phone were in the same car you left with.
Mark was silent. He had a fixated look at Foma. His eyes red with rage. Foma keeps walking towards him and demanding answers.
FOMA
Mark talk to me. Why on earth would you leave me at that party. How could you do such a thing to me. Mark I am talking to....
Without warning, Mark gives Foma a heavy push. Foma begins to fall backwards down the stairs, cracking bones on every drop. She finally lands at the foot of the staircase and passes out.
Mark is shocked. He couldn't believe what just happened.
He is screaming her name. He calls for help and all the helps in the house run out to witness what just happened. Mark is crying bitterly and everyone is holding him from falling down the stirs himself.

No dear. That is why I am calling. I forgot my project files in your car after you dropped me off at school. We have been summoned into the Professors office and I can not leave. Please baby, can you help me bring my project files to me.
MARK EFUTAYO
But my love, I am already at work. The traffic from this place to your school is hell. Can't you reschedule your defense?
FOMA
No babe, you know how important this is to me. It's my dream we are talking about here. Please baby.
Mark keeps mute for a while to weigh his options. He paces round his office.
MARK EFUTAYO
OK OK. I will get the files for you. You will pay me for this stress. I will have to borrow one of my colleagues fast bike because that will be the best way to beat that traffic and also get you the files in time.

FOMA
(Confused)
Where am I?
NONSO
You are in the hospital. But everything is fine. You are fine.
Foma looks around nervously and tries to lift herself from the bed. Nonso stops her immediately.
NONSO
No Foma. Don't do that. You will hurt yourself. Relax. You will be OK soon.
FOMA
Where is Mark?
NONSO
You mean your husband? He was here a while ago.
Foma's eyes pool with tears as she recalls what Mark did to her. She tries to hide it from the Doctor who notices.
NONSO
Talk to me Foma. What really happened?
Foma turns and gives Nonso a long look. Then she turns the other way and stares blankly at the wall.
FOMA
I slipped and fell down the stairs.
NONSO
That wasn't what your husband said.
Nonso removes his glasses and gives Foma a long look. He moves closer and sits by the edge of her bed.
NONSO
Look Foma, without being told. I see domestic violence written all over this. From a professional angle, such a fatal fall can only be caused by a push and my wildest guess is that your husband did this. I could tell the guilt from his eyes.
Foma tries hard to hide her tears from Nonso but she couldn't hold it back. They begin to roll down her cheeks. Nonso hands her a handkerchief.
NONSO
The worst thing anyone can do to her self is to hide a problem. Imagine if you woke up and found out you were dead. What will be the excuse then? Your husband will mourn for a few years and move on with his life. While you are dead and gone. Think about this Foma, no man is worth your life. No man is worth your freedom.
Foma bursts into a heavy cry. She weeps uncontrollably. Nonso reaches over to console her.
NONSO
It is OK Foma. Everything will be fine. Stop hiding a problem.
FOMA
It is all my fault. I made him the way he is. He was not always like this.
NONSO
Don't you dare take the blame for this. No man has the license to hit a woman. Foma, you are the victim here and you need to take actions.
FOMA
I love him. I love my husband so much. Beyond words.
NONSO
You need to stop this at once. There is a big difference between love and pity. You pity him, that is why you feel you have to stay with him. You feel whatever you did to him was so bad that you have to throw your life away for him. You need to take a bold action.
Foma cries bitterly. Nonso tries his best to comfort her.

I understand what you are here for but I am afraid that will not be possible.
Mark wheels himself to the right to face the Doctor. He gives him a stern look.
MARK EFUTAYO

How do you mean Doctor?
NONSO
I mean I will not let you see her
MARK EFUTAYO
(Shocked)
What right do you have to keep me away from my wife. I brought her here. I paid the bills.
NONSO
There is no doubt in that. It is my duty as a Doctor to keep my patients away from potential threats. You are a threat to Foma's life and I will not let you get near her.
Mark is filled with rage. His whole body shakes in anger and he does his best to control himself. He clenches his fist and bites his lip.
MARK EFUTAYO
(Angry)
How dare you. What gave you the right? Who told you that you can take such decisions over people's lives?
NONSO
As a matter of fact. It is Foma's decision and I am impacting on it. As the Chief medical Officer of this hospital, it is in my place to....
MARK EFUTAYO
(Cutting in)
Shut up. Shut that filthy mouth of yours. You have no right. As a matter of fact. I need to take my wife away from here immediately.
Mark makes and effort to wheel himself into Foma's ward. He is quickly stopped by Nonso.
NONSO
It is obvious that a man of your nature can not be reasoned with. Security.. security.
Mark tries all effort to go into Foma's ward but he is restrained.
Minutes later, two security men arrive and force him out of the hospital. He curses and fights on his way out.

All thanks to you. How are you?
NONSO
I am good, just work. I came to check on you.
FOMA
Thank you so much.
Nonso turns to leave and Foma calls him back.
FOMA
Are you married? I don't see a wedding band but yet you seem experienced in the issues of marriage.
Nonso smiles at her. He walks closer to Foma's bed and sits at the edge.
NONSO
Well, I am married in theory not in practice.
FOMA
(Confused)
What does that mean?
NONSO
It means I am in a very unhappy marriage.
Foma is surprised. She stares awkwardly at Nonso.
FOMA
Oh my God. It is almost hard to believe such a thing can happen to someone as experienced as you. What sort of bad marriage are we talking about here.
NONSO
One that involves extortion and infidelity.
FOMA
My goodness.
Nonso smiles and stands to his feet. He paces around the room as he narrates his story to Foma.
NONSO
I married an incredible lady. Few years down the line. I guess my work came in the way or something. But this once incredible lady turned into something else. Now I don't know her anymore. She has turned into a wolf. Over the years, she has come up with different cons to extort money from me.
FOMA
Oh my goodness. I am so sorry.
NONSO
Oh don't feel sorry for me. I take it as a learning process. I tried my best to hold onto the marriage because of the love we shared and for the sake of the children. Now I have discovered there is no remedy. I will always love her but I wont give up myself for her.
Tears roll down Foma's cheeks and she begins to cry. Nonso goes over to console her.
NONSO
Foma, you will be alright. You have already made up your mind. It is time to take the bold step. Speaking of which. Where will you be staying?
FOMA
I will have to stay with my secretary till everything is sorted.
NONSO
That is very good. You are doing good.

MARK EFUTAYO
Baby I am so sorry. I will change for good this time. I promise you that.
MARK EFUTAYO
I have had enough with your change. All the time you promise to change but instead you progress in your brutality.
Foma bursts out of the compound with Lisa and gets into a waiting taxi. Mark cries out bitterly.

FOMA
I am your wife's Attorney.
NONSO
Oh my God. I can't believe she dragged you into this.
Ada jumps to her feet. Everyone stared at her in surprised.
ADA
Dragged her into what? What are you saying? That you are innocent or what?
Nonso's attorney
As a matter of fact we are here to prove his innocence. Do you know anyone by the name Abdul?
Ada gives the Attorney a stern look. She ignores the question and fixes her gaze on a light bulb. The attorney shakes his head and continues.
NONSO'S ATTORNEY
We have an audio recording where he confessed on all you people's activities details of how you victim played all the evidence against my client. You have two options here. It's either you go to jail for victim playing or you drop all charges on my client. You will be required to sign a divorce document.
Everyone is silent.
FOMA
We will drop all the charges.
ADA
What? Foma no.
Foma gives Ada a stern look. She stands up to pick up all her documents.
FOMA
There is no offer better for you than to drop the charges and move on. I feel so deceived by you. How long were you thinking it would be before your crimes are known to the public. You took advantage of my passion for abused women. How dare you?
Foma walks out of the boardroom and Nonso follows her immediately.

Foma rushes out of the board room and tries to make her way to the exit when Nonso catches up with her.
He holds her by the hand to make her face him.
NONSO
I can't believe my wife dragged you into such a mess.
FOMA
I feel so used. I can't believe anyone will come this extent for a selfish desire.
NONSO
Such is the mind of my dear wife. I see everything clearly now. I can not wait to sign those divorce papers. With this thing dangling on her neck. I am sure to get the custody of our children.
Foma gives Nonso a big smile and they hug one another.
NONSO
