October ProgBlog #2: steem is also a timesink :S

If it's not PvZ I've been distracted by steem, oops :S And I haven't even been wandering off my not-that-busy feed, I just have this bad habit of commenting on most of the things I upvote ^_^;

Finally finished the phoenix tattoo! Well I'm pretty sure it's finished anyway, I've dropped shadow layers on the body and the froof and after some playing around decided the wings and tail feathers don't need shadowing.

It's nice being happy with how things are turning out for a change, though I did have a big stress for a short while about how the first layer of green coverts over the blue ones weren't even. It's still bugging me at the moment BECAUSE I KNOW but on the bright side I can't see it now that I've done all the green bits at the top so it's easier not to care.

They look pretty nice together too.

Think I got the balance I was aiming for.

However while I was painting (because I kept turning the wireframe on every now and again whenever the painting went slightly weird to check the seams forgetting I can't see the seams in wireframe mode in the paint room) I noticed that the body topology wasn't really working around the chest area and after a while and suspect I might need a few more arm loops. @rainite dropped a video they've been looking at for retopo and there was a female character in the thumbnail and I felt like a complete idiot for not figuring maybe I should loop rounded breasts as well.

So I should probably have a polyflow that goes something like

Well first job was finish the tattoos and save it out to its own file so I've got all the layers, export all the layers as I can theoretically import the layers back onto a similar shaped uv map (hopefully I can do a similar enough one for the male model) otherwise I have the image maps which I should theoretically be able to arrange the uv islands onto.

I've also decided against painting the displacement maps and instead just finishing the sculpt and baking it because the sculpt tools are about a million times easier to work with. I abused the liveclay brush a bit though and have been recently reminded why I was going to experiment with painting displacement when the mesh got super dense in some areas and brush strokes were getting bumpy. Must remember to keep switching up the brushes. I'm currently in the process of giving Zara a breast reduction (I hate doing boobs I'm so not good at them) and will fix up a couple of fingernails and finish the toenails, and will then adjust the retopo as necessary as well as the uv map.

Then I bake the displacements and hope I can reapply the tattoos and then hopefully I'll have both Zara and a decent female Base base to use (I always start sculpts from the generic base model to make sure I actually make the characters as my dislike of "ruining" "nice" models would otherwise mean all my characters end up looking too similar if I do them from a gendered base, but bugger doing retopo and uv mapping repeatedly XD).

After that it will be off to Blender to do hair and clothes and the rest of the texturing (including remaking my Cycles skin shader for Eevee) and then throwing her and Red into a scene together. I was thinking of doing a comparison to see whether the painted or procedural skin textures looked better but I think I'm going to swallow the extra render time for the ease of using procedural skin textures which will mean I'll have to redo Red at some stage (and may as well fix that retopo there too).

At least it's moving again.

@steempeak and @centerlink are each 5% beneficiaries.

Want a crowd character? If you interact frequently with me here (either on my posts or your posts or better yet both!) or on one of the linked Discord channels, all you have to do is let me know and tell me what you'd like :) It can be one of your characters (including ones you make up on the spot for this XD) or a self insert. There's a bunch of different human types to choose from, and pets/other animals are also welcome.

Thanks for looking! ^_^

Nothing wrong with that. It's pretty awesome :>)

Glad to learn that you are so positive overall this time. Good luck with the breast reduction.

I'm kind of rage powered so just because I sound angry doesn't necessarily mean I'm negative, just means I'm more likely to do something about it ;D

The breast reduction went pretty well but I kind of got carried away with the retopo (was only supposed to try to fix that area but ended up fixing the entire torso and now she looks like she's wearing some dodgy anime outfit)

Just ignore the messy uv islands, I'm kind of having to redo the map on the fly as well aaaaahhhh XD

This polyflow should work a lot better but as per usual I'll have to find out in Blender when I get to that stage x_x

Is it you that is turning like me--worrying too much about our character--or is it that our habits of doing that just got amplified? XD
Well, most of the time tweaking things up is inevitable. Better to work on it more than disappointed by the final result, right? The tattoos look pretty cool when you show them both visible like that, Ry!

P.S. I'm pretty sure I posted this comment and upvoted the post a few days ago. Stupid internet always slowing down at the wrong time.
