Sea Kayaking the caves of the Apostle Island cliffs
2018 took us on a family "Tour de Great Lakes" road trip. Our first stop was Lake Superior at the northern tip of Wisconsin, home to a magnificent bluff at the Apostle Islands. Camping at the tip of the state, we rented out a three hour guided kayak tour to venture the cliffs and caves.
The morning started out rainy and foggy. Storms rolled in that night and our campground was a flooded puddle by sunrise. Still, we had pre-paid reservations to kayak and the outfitters weren't going to let a little mist and sprinkles stop us.
The fog lifted rolling back out into the depth of Lake Superior and granted us spectacular views of the cliff walls.
To my disappointment, rock climbing is not allowed, but sea kayaks offer an excellent way to experience the shoreline.
As we returned to our launch point, thick black clouds rolled in overhead as the fog returned chasing us back to the beach.
More on that story to come: trapped in Bayfield, as well as the rest of our Great Lakes tour through Upper Michigan, into Canada, all the way to Niagara Falls, and back around.
