Taking inventory

In all of our courses, we talk a lot about taking inventory and how to do that early on. The reason I like to talk about this is because I want you to know exactly where you stand and oftentimes this activity helps you to be honest with yourself.

The great thing about fighting an addiction from home is that you can do this with yourself, be completely honest and nobody has to even know - only you!

So how do you take inventory?

Start with a log - any way you can, using a pen and paper, your phone, etc.

If you have already stopped your addiction - you can try to do this by memory. If you are still partaking then start taking inventory now!

You'll need to have at least 3 days to gain an average. Most of my courses have a log attached as a resource.

How much time and money are you spending on your addiction?

It’s important to know exactly how much time and money you are spending. When logging your addiction habits, you’ll take the data you gathered over 3 days, add it up and then divide by 3 to get your average.

For example, if you spend a total of $27.00 on alcohol over the 3 days that would be an average of $9.00 per day.

If you spend 15 hours partaking in an addiction over 3 days such as video games or porn then that would be an average of 5 hours per day.

If possible, it’s important to calculate both time and money.

How much time do you spend high each day?

How much money do you spend on video games or porn?

Once you know how much time and money you are spending on average each day, then times that number by 7.

For the alcohol example, that would be $63.00 per week!

Or maybe the video game example at 35 hours per week!

To take this one step further, times your weekly average by 52.

What would you do with an extra $3276.00 every year?

What would you do with an additional 1820 hours every year?

Taking inventory is important because it helps you to recognize some of the other aspects of recovery that I talk about in all of my courses.

Taking up additional hobbies, giving yourself permission to spend money on your health; gym memberships, healthier foods, etc., and just knowing that once you are able to kick your addiction for good, new doors will open and you will start to gain more clarity on how you are now using your time and money in a more productive way.

As always, I’m here for you!
