found the @_actionhunger (twitter) vending machine for the homeless in nottingham today.

in #action-hunger7 years ago (edited)

i was really pleased to have found the action hunger machine.

I think it’s the first one in the uk if I’m not mistaken, I’m not sure if that’s a local project or how it came about but I wanted to post about it because I think it’s a bloody genius idea that needs to be in every bus, coach or train station across the land if not the world.

What’s neat about it is that if you are homeless and registered you get a plastic card that you can use I believe three times a day to be able to take things from the machine — while at it we saw gloves in there, food snacks and sanitary towels for women, what a fantastic start to at least giving people who are homeless some semblance of acknowledgement of the human being at that source, street level.

https://www.actionhunger.org is the site to find out more information about this great concept and effort, i hope they find whatever funding they need to make this a reality across the country -- recently launched their first vending machine for the homeless in Nottingham, UK. The purpose is two-fold: to function as a lifeline, but also as a service through which users keep in regular contact with support services like local shelters and outreach centres.

I wanted to stick this out there on the social blockchain because I know that steemit is really heading to the moon in terms of google set and so I know that people searching for this will find this post looking for the machine or at least hearing about it — I’d love to interview the people behind it and maybe just maybe we can use blockchain to take this a step further maybe and use these vending machines to further connect us to the homeless.

My thoughts are maybe with storytelling and curation, gathers, mini powered raspberry pi machines with a battery bank, solar cell or a wireless keyboard, way to take a photo with a cheap camera, setup of social accounts with the logins, steemit accounts already created, delegated steem for taking and supplying things for the vending machines.

p.s -- i'm thinking the @greenman idea of 'direct to vendor' could work well for 'direct to homeless' to fund getting assets for these machines globally -- https://maxgerber.com/direct-to-vendor is a website that @maxg made to track donations to the greenman project -- man, this could be awesome -- machines, supplies, blockchain funded, helping the homeless become storytellers, street level reporting. .. the scope here is massive.

This is the best idea ever! You are right. These need to be rolled out in every city of the world!

Great idea friend, your soul is very wise. Want to help the homeless person to join steemit. Thus the homeless can earn income from their work. And this snack machine is great for friends, if we had it it would be more fun.

Wow, this really exists!

Oh wow! What a great idea! I see you have tagged it as Notts is this in the city centre?

ah yeah that's a good idea! gonna tag it now. thanks for mentioning that! :)

it's in the INTU broadmarsh, you know, that rough and ready INTU part ;) lol.

haha yea I thought that was where it was :)

Great idea, I will start chasing them :)

another thing that popped in my mind is that surely someone like http://fareshare.org.uk should be working together with these guys and have some local 'runners' that fill the machine and document that whole process to put a 'lense' on the 'process'

Wow, I really like the idea of an automated Steemit charity. You send STEEM/SBD to an address, it gets converted to Fiat via Blocktrades/Coinbase/Changelly automatically, and then a donation is automatically issued. Everything transparent, with a public website to show transactions and receipts! I'll have to think a little about how it will work, but it seems like an amazing and incredibly impactful idea!

RIGHT?! - i mean it ticks so many boxes for me from things like fareshare (we have a food charity locally) to the way it get's loaded to the items that people pick up, storytelling as bloggers, how they went from street to local advocates to having a place to live, etc etc. . i'm going to build on this...

There are a handful of charities that take BTC as donations already. It would be very easy to have a Blocktrades address set up for each of them and monitor who sends what, though with Bitcoin fees being as high as they are I'm not crazy about that idea.

Although... Tax Season is coming around. If you could automate the tax deduction paperwork before the 2017 US Tax Deadline you might have something...

oh i like that idea. i mean tbh, this idea will roll out anyway, i see them taking surplus foods from places, putting in the machine, finding sponsors etc... i see that only as a sticking plaster effect thou, what we really need is to mobilize the homeless people to not be homeless and get back into everyday visualbility, give them a reason to be part of society again.
